71 Super Beetle

What's an excellent condition 71 Super Beetle with 27,500 miles worth these days?

Hardtop or convertible? Any proof of the low mileage?

Not sure, but an old curmudgeon neighbor (who I am becoming) has one that he will not part with...

it's a hardtop. it was used as a DARE training car. I don't know exactly what that means, just that it wasn't driven much at all. It wasn't used by kids. I think just driven to schools.

In really excellent shape assuming its a hardtop and not a special model, probably around 5k in your area.

That car is easily worth 4-6, more if in really good shape

Tempted to offer you 3 for it.

Arden will be driving next year.

Would be an awesome 1st car for her.

Although I suspect Mom will want something with airbags.

Oh well.

My friend was thinking it would be a good first car for their daughter. I didn't agree for safety reasons alone.

Thanks Sid, I thought it was a $5K car, maybe more, but Thom's tepid response says it all.

Well if the girl is on the shorter side then she has additional things to consider.

Link for a good quickie review.

x1....

As much as my daughter loves our 62 beetle and would love to drive it regularly, it's not a safe car, compared to anything else on the roads these days. And throw in texting teenagers in SUVs on the way to and from school....

This.

Maybe in 1980, but not today.

Old style VW beetles..

Yep probably not a good car for every day driving now but back in the 1960's when I drove mine sometimes it would fishtail on slippery corners and get blown around by semis going by. Big concern then and it would be now is the gas tank sitting out front but I don't remember it being explosive like the Pinto. Ralph Nader missed that one.

Can't remember if my 1958 Beetle had seatbelts or not. I really miss my '58 Beetle. That singing engine and exhaust, neat manual transmission.....G.

A good friend drove a 71 super throughout high school, well until his jr year when it got rear-ended. EDIT: He walked away...

Safety wise, I would not buy it if the high school the gal plans to go to, offers open campus for lunch. Stats are against you...
