A Real War on Cars

How does your old Porsche - that you intend to keep forever - fit into this scenario?

Is it time for a real war on cars? | Science Matters | David Suzuki Foundation

Until there is SOME SORT of viable replacement to move people around the car will be around.

In the big cities mass transit is a good and logical solution. In spread out areas of the country there is no other option. The Oklahoma City metro area is over 1,000 square miles. The bus is the only mass transit and it does not even go very far.

Classic cars are only a small part of the cars on the road. It will be interesting to see what happens to transportation in the next 25 years.

I wonder what kind of car David Suzuki drives. A Tesla no doubt thinking that in doing so he's saving the planet. Overlooking the fact that to build his car's battery involves smelting rare earth metals (producing pollution), to charge his car's battery requires the burning of fossil fuels to produce the electricity (so far 80% of our electric power comes from this - only 3% from windmills!) and on and on... What a dumba$$

The author obviously lives in an urban area. I agree with GH85, in cities we should try reduce the impact the automobile has, I think mass transit is a great idea.

You can find areas in every state, though, that the only way to get around is by car. How will they address that?

I liked what one of the responders stated "Dr Robinson" not cars but wood burning causes more deaths than cars. So the title should be changed to read War against Trees.

In any case, Like Charlton Heston said "from my cold dead hands".

I thought writers have to be partially intelligent, "cars kill..." , really? Maybe his editor should have done his job and edited it with " People Driving cars kill...." then the it will piss off the Humanists.

It's not exactly a new opinion. I'm not too worried about my Porsches.

One of the reasons I posted this thing has to do with the fact that the politicians, who have many motivations, can and will pass laws making car ownership more difficult and expensive. They mainly live in cities, after all.

No, the minuscule number of classic cars running around make no dent in anything, except to the extent that they prevent a little new car production, thereby saving resources and keeping things clean. Never mind, they are cars and they will be painted with the same brush, regardless.

Businesses and politicians don't want to stop making cars; look at all the employment and money they generate. Cars that last for 50 years would be the cleanest of all, but they wouldn't make money. The world runs on money, not gasoline.

I have to go out to the garage now to do some work on my classic Porsche.

It will be just like the Rush song "Red Barchetta" except it will be a red 911.

I'll preserve it down in a barn for my great grandkid to take out and drive like a hooligan while avoiding the authorities.

There is a Isaac Asimov story about a time in the future where cars are highly taxed and rare. The main character drives around in a big flashy car and everyone is jealous. In the end he is spending many hours winding up the massive rubber bands that really make it run.

Politicians pretty much vote how the corporations and their lobbyists pay them to vote. If car manufacturers chip in on their campaigns....

PARF is not appropriate. This does cover the future use of our Porsches. Regular Off Topic maybe.

A Real War on Cars

Anytime you convert one form of energy to another there is a loss. So charging your electric car is saving nothing if it was then you just invented perpetual motion!

It is not a war on cars it is a war on humanity. David wants to be chief of the Green police.

Simples - there'll be an increasing requirement to demonstrate roadworthiness. Eg mot/NCT or whatever more frequently. Things like kidney rust will be a fail.

Eventually only those who can afford to keep them absolutely perfect all the time will endure.

The rest will give up the ghost....sell and invest in the latest hybrid,

That's my tuppence worth

In the 40's and 50's our wonderful Urban Rulers decided to rip up all the rails systems that were in place and operating in many metropolitan areas. Rail & Electric Cars were replaced with the CAR. All that steel was probably used to make cars. If I could I'd take the train to work everyday. I lived in Europe and you don't need a car to live there. The train system is awesome!
They went one way and of course we went the other. Big Mistake!!

Kids Movie Roger Rabbit theme of the the movie showed in that time what the attitude of the rail system in that society. It's a Kids movie, but that point always stuck in my mind. Tear down Toon Town to build a Freeway!

When I ride in a plane and it's approaching I look down and see all those BLACK VEINS stretching thought the landscape. Pretty Ugly! What have we done?

I'll always drive a car and I love "Driving". Baby Boomer's were brought up to drive. Cars are my Hobie! In 40 or 50 years cars may only be in museums? I have enough cars to keep going for the rest of my life. So I'll be on the road as long as I can plop my Butt in the drivers seat, press the clutch and here that internal combution engine explode with life! It Music to my ears, slaping gears, reving that motor and crusing on my favorite road!

I live in Vermont and travel frequently to R.I. to visit Mom, and when I go through Boston, I say to myself " How can people put up with this everyday?" Stop & Go on a Highway? There are just too many cars down there, and not enough road to handle them all. I can't imagine LA or NY.

With the way they are pushing the green agenda our old cars will be eventually outlawed and crushed for being gross polluters. The green people will go after us like they once went after Hummer owners for driving those gas guzzlers. The Media will portray us enthusiast as unamerican. You see it with everything that is going on in the world right now.
