I don't have a large front yard or backyard just a small 12 feet by 50 feet. I'll just use my hands the old fashion way lol

My experience is that Weed/Feed combo products are very poor on the weed killing part. Use separate products. I'll put down fertilizer and then use a garden hose spray weed killer from Ortho or similar products. Be sure the ground is dry and it won't be raining in the next 24-36 hours to have max effect.
After that, some weeds just won't die and have to be pulled by hand.

Well thank God I'm not the only one who noticed that weed-n-feed doesn't work anymore. I thought it was just me.

“A 2000 study of 1517 former employees of Dow Chemical Company who had been exposed to the chemical in manufacturing or formulating 2,4-D found no significant increase in risk of mortality due to NHL following 2,4-D exposure, but did find an increase in risk of mortality due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. On August 8, 2007, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a ruling that stated that existing data do not support a link between human cancer and 2,4-D exposure.”

Well, that’s a relief. All that spray back etc that I ingested for decades treating my lawn (when the wind shifted) won’t cause cancer. Whew! Shame about the Lou Gehrig’s disease, though.

While it is a major PITA that we can’t buy weed chemicals that work anymore here, I have a hard time justifying MY NEED for them. Let’s face it. Cancer-free or not, 2,4-D it is an evil fluid. It looks evil & it smells evil. Kind of like brake cleaner: you just instinctively know this crap is bad.

What's a weed? I have'nt seen one in my yard in 5 years, and I've got almost 1 acre. I get it treated 3 times per year and they do a great job.

They are talking about banning the 2,4, D stuff here. The Pro's that use it say the Iron based replacement is twice as expensive and works 1/2 as well as the 2,4,D and can take two weeks to have a noticeable effect under perfect conditions. The iron based burns the leafs and flowers of the weeds leaving the root so you have to apply more often.

Stock up on the good stuff before it's too late.

I treat my property twice per year. One application of 2, 4-D and one of Trimec, spaced out by about a month. I also spot spray some areas with roundup/glyphosate.

Evil liquids? bah. I remember DDT being sold at the farm & garden store, and remember people wetting the ground with chlordane as a termite barrier before starting home construction.

Until recently I had a state issued applicators license, and have sprayed thousands and thousands of gallons of chemicals from airplanes. I don't know why people worry such; I hardly ever cough up any blood.

fwiw... If you establish a healthy lawn of zoysia or st. augustine grass, it will choke out most weeds naturally.

I am giving corn gluten a try this year. Apparently it does not allow seeds to germinate and is non toxic. Supposedly it is effective at controlling crabgrass also. It is to be applied very early in the spring and late fall. Bought a 55 lb bag for $24. Will report back with findings.

Cheers

Hit them with a MAP or Propane torch for a couple of seconds.
