I'm not saying it isn't fun or practical. I am saying it is FUGLY!!!

meh - I like it fine. Best looking car ever? Not even close. But there is a broader aesthetic at play. Have you sat in one and driven it? Part of the reason for the exterior shape is what they've done with the interior. That said, the coach doors are not particularly functional - not an ideal car if you need to use the rear seat regularly.

They are going for a look that differentiates the car (and the i-line) from the rest of the pack. And they've done that. One reviewer was doing a test of the MB electric SUV and the i3. Said that no one notice the MB. The BMW generated a lot of interest and conversation. That is good for the brand.

They've been experiencing pretty slow sales. Not sure if that is from its looks or price (my guess is looks).

It's not just BMW, it's EV's in general. People are doing more math these days it seems, at least according to the articles.

Hybrid and Electric Car Sales Are in a Slump. Why?

nostatic 09-11-2014 03:30 PM

Though Aug 2014 is up. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1094183_plug-in-electric-car-sales-in-aug-all-time-leaf-high-volt-best-in-12-months

As for the math, it totally depends on your local circumstances and how you view/use transportation.

Also known for generating interest and conversation.

Unlikely to win at Pebble beach.

Well, it's certainly not attractive, but it's not that bad.

Not attractive, but very cool cars. I had a buddy that had one, actually enormously useful and practical. I like them. I don't want one, but, they are a good alternative to a giant SUV.

You know, it seems like there's something else that can be said about.

I saw one of these on the road a couple of months back. Very odd looking. Azteks were the worst. There's something that I actually like about the Juke.

The i8, that looks pretty sweet.

But then everything can't look like this

or one of those fancy new MB 911 killers.

Noah930 09-11-2014 09:58 PM

There's a guy with a collection of Isettas, Yugos, Amphicars, and Murano Convertibles who's just salivating at this thing.

nostatic 09-11-2014 10:22 PM

Well, I suppose they could have made it looks like a Civicordamry...

5String43 09-12-2014 06:18 AM

Apparently there are those willing to be "that guy." I actually saw one of them out loose on the streets the other day....

Got back from Germany last night. One of these was following me for a little while and, while fugly, the daytime running lights definitely did not let me forget there was someone behind me. They were a little like the BMW angel eyes and super white, but not obnoxiously so. These cars do make a lot of sense for parking in European cities. German cities now have zones where only "green" cars can drive and they've long taxed cars based on engine displacement. I'd say this car is a real winner in an urban German environment.

I'm convinced that there must be significant numbers of people who crave/need attention and want to drive something so different from everything else on the road that they're willing to go to any lengths to do that,
I thought that's how we all got here?

... And if we are already here, who would ever go there and by that?

:-)

Josh D 09-12-2014 12:41 PM

I'm holding out for the 'M' version, then I'm all over it!

A Porsche gets you attention? Even here in doo-dah, nobody bats an eye. Drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini and things change a bit.

I live in canada

I saw one of these things on the road today. It looked like some kind of goofy made-up car you'd see in a futuristic movie, you know, the ones where cars in 2014 fly and stuff. Too bad we (2014) only have rain sensing wipers and these things...
