Need garage door opener help:
I need to get an additional opener for a house I'm renting out. The opener is a Genie, fairly new, possibly "multi-spectrum"(?)
I know nothing about garage door openers. I called a garage door place and they told me that they would need to come out and program a new opener at the house, total cost something like $110 including the opener. Does that sound about right? This is not something I can DIY? Here is the opener I have: ![]() ![]()

OK, I just noticed in the first photo that it says, "multicode" on it?

"Programing" am opener takes all of 3 minutes. And 1.7 minutes of that is getting a stepladder in place so you can get to the unit. Google or look on youtube with you brand of opener. Really simple....might check with manufacturer for a replacement

My opener has a series of switches inside, up, down or in the middle. Programming the remote consists of making the switches on the remote match the opener. I will be down there in a few weeks. For a hundred bucks and a six pack, I will program it for you.

Ok, thanks fellas. I knew I could count on you.
![]() On closer inspection, it actually says "Intelicode" on the opener. Off to Home Defect I go. |

+1. The house I rented in LA had the same issue. My landlord wanted have someone come out and do it. I showed her in 2 minutes how to do it. That scored some points with her.

$110 is a reasonable amount to have someone who knows what they are doing, and stands behind their work. My company charges $65 for the service call (about half of the going rate around here) and the remote is $40. so, $105+ is not bad for getting it done.
They are easy to program. IIRC the Genie Intellicode has a "learn" button under the light cover on the right side as you are looking at it. You just have to push the "learn" button and the button on the new remote within 30 seconds. The light on the opener should blink if it took the new remote successfully. If not this is where things could get a bit tricky. Most openers only store 7-8 codes, so if you keep trying to program the new remote and it isn't taking the code...you could be erasing the codes for any other remotes, keypads, and "HOMELINK" ( a remote built into your car) devices. This is the only slippery slope you could possibly experience. There are some older openers that have "dip" switches (as mentioned by Tobra). On those units you just have to make sure the ones on the opener and remote match. Good Luck with however you decide to proceed.

How many times, in your experience, has the remote wandered from its post after its been programmed by you? Man, the stuff I read on here each day is priceless!

OK, so after reading the replies on this thread, I went to my friendly local hardware/lumber yard and bought a Genie remote for $29 that was compatible. I brought the other remote with but the box on the new one said, "compatible with all Intelicode remotes", so I knew I was all good.
The tenant programed it in about 60 seconds right in front of me. Yay! ![]() Thanks as always! ![]()

If you think about sending someone to the service call in a company truck, through traffic, burning up company gas and employee/serviceman time, $110 isn't a bad price if you can't figure it out yourself.
Nothing for nothing and damn little for free.

No, it is not rocket science....that's why I can do it...lol.
As far as standing behind their work, I think I kind of explained what could go wrong for the DIYer. Some folks just don't want the headache if something doesn't work properly. They can call the people they hired to come and make it right. I am glad you fixed it Speeder !
