I used to know the guy that organizes the trip well, but I don't think he is doing it anymore. Either way I'm sure he could point you in the right direction. Call me if you have any questions when the time comes. I could talk Philmont all day.
because, I WANT TO GO BACK TO PHILMONT

I WANNA GO BAAAAACK TO PHILMONT

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are very different organizations. Cub Scouts is kinda lame in my opinion, of course the younger boys can't do as much as the older ones.

My son thought Cub Scouts was ok, he LOVES Boy Scouts.

Rick,
Heading to Hardy Arkansas to Kia Kima. I hope that's the same place your son is heading to. We did it last year and the boys that went loved it more than Philmont! They had the opportunity to do a High Adventure, Sea Base or Philmont this summer and they choose Kia Kima again. Go figure. What troop number is he? If your not comfortable posting, send me a PM.

What? You didn't stay to get the "metal band" merit badge?

I used to think scouts was the nerdyest thing I had ever done... but it amazes me how often I find myself using skills I learned there.

There was a time when my Son wanted to quit...I told him that the world was filled with men who wish they obtained the Eagle rank...but I never met one who regretted getting it...

Ah, they're heading to Camp Pioneer. Bummer! If they were in the same camp I would bust out my fly fishing gear and join you in the river!

A scout is:

Trustworthy
Loyal
Helpful
Friendly
Courteous
Kind
Obedient
Cheerful
Thrifty
Brave
Clean
And reverent

Not a cut and paste!

Eagle Scout here. Still remember that and I'm 57. Love the outdoors, knots, camping, and being prepared! Great lessons for all young men.

The only thing better than being an Eagle Scout is receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Starting to play music in a rock band put me out of scouting as well...

To be brutally honest I could have cared less about the badges and moving up the ranks... camping in the woods, rolling around in the dirt, not having to take a bath for days, building a fire with scraps of wood you found and lighting it without matches then cooking dinner over that fire, playing with knifes and axes... that was what scouts was all about for me.
YMMV

In my opinion scouting is no different than the PCA or ANY organization.........you get out of it what the members put into it. Get in a good/active group and great things can happen, likewise get in a bad group and it's very difficult to make good things happen. Getting young boys/men active and motivated for common goals is a good thing and should be encouraged. Learning individual skills that can help the team/society is a good thing that hopefully will last a lifetime.

Never made it past Bobcat, but...

My son joined Cub Scouts and I expected to be a behind the scenes leader, but ended up as the Tiger Cub Den Leader. And the journey started! Stints as Cubmaster, Webelos Den Leader, Asst Scoutmaster, and will now take over the troop as Scoutmaster. 3 Bead Woodbadger, Powderhorn, University Chairman, etc. I agree that health of the troop organization is related to the active participation of your parents. We have a hard time attracting and keeping boys enrolled (we have about 8 or so). Would love to go to Philmont some day. My 15 year old son no longer participates, but I still do because I enjoy it and like to see my Scouts succeed. Hopefully I can get a Venture Crew started when my 11 year old daughter turns 14!
