And a River Runs Through It!!
Cannot believe my luck! My cousin is overseeing some construction projects up in Montana and he has invited me up for a fly fishing trip! I will be flying into Missoula and then he will pick me up with his car and we will drive up to Kallispell where his project is going on. He has meetings one morning until about 9 AM and then we are free to fish for the next three days.
I have set up a guided trip on the Blackfoot river for one full day and we are planning to try and fish ourselves without a guide the other two days. Anyone been up there? Any tips on fishing locations or any specific gear to bring? I'll be taking my 5 weight rod with a standard weight forward floating line. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403616949.jpg |
That is so cool! Color me green with envy.
I spent a lot of time two summer ago in all parts of Montana doing R&D work with unmanned aircraft. We flew a lot out of Whitefish, where one of the guys who got in with the State lived. Just fricking awesome. Enjoy! |
Rick, would you or your cousin adopt me?
Have a great time! |
Wow, so very cool. Be the level headed brother.

Envious! Have a great time.

Montana is great! We're hauling our dirt bikes to Butte next month for a few days of riding. I wish we could have made it for July 4th, but had to settle for Evel Knievel days. Last year, Independence Day weekend is awesome, most fireworks I've ever seen. Don't forget the pasties.

Your 5 weight rig should be just perfect for Montana. Take along an assortment of streamers, drys and nymphs in the usual patterns. I'm sure you'll pick up a few of the local specialties when you get there.
The only real change I've made to my equipment in the last few years is sunglasses with "readers" (so it doesn't take me 5 min to tie a single knot) and wearing a lanyard instead of a vest. Really lightens the load a bit and you still have your essentials (just wear a fishing shirt with pockets large enough for fly boxes, I like the Simms "Big Sky"). This woman makes the best lanyards... Bad ass. For fun show up with a big heavy action spinning rod with a huge reel loaded up with 20 test. A fist full of 3/8th oz spoons still in packaging rounds out the illusion.
I bet they don't let you off the plane. Sent via Jedi mind trick. |

OT but my late FIL was from Butte and was a good buddy of Evel Knievel. Does anybody know how he got his name? My FIL told me quite a few times..funny story! Alex |
Simply Lovely.

This is a section of the Blackfoot called the Cathedral. I fished it at dusk and the sunlight illuminated a fishermans fly line as if it were on fire. The rocks cast purple light over the water. That scene is forever etched in my brain. Magic.

My aunt lives on Flathead lake near Polson. Beautiful area. There are some great places to eat in Whitefish.
