Fox or Coyote?

Our place in southern Ontario borders 600+ acres of conservancy area, and we get a ton of interesting fauna through the back yard. We have a clear 150 meters by 300 meters of field in back and we can see just about everything that passes through.

We get deer, coyotes, one wolf, turkeys, raccoons, geese, herons, fox and turtles to and from the pond. Even an albino skunk until the neighbor blasted him with the 12g.

A few weeks ago we saw first one then a second reddish canine-type animals trot through the back yard. We all thought they were red foxes.

Then today I noticed them playing for about 6 hours along the border of the tree line. The telescopic lens was "organized" and now cannot be located so all I had was my Samsung phone. Here are a few pics and video.

There were 3 of them, all about 10-15kgs. All were reddish and had black on the back of their ears but white in the ears face-on. One has a grey-blackish tail, one is white with a black tip and the other is red with a white tip. The tails are about 75% the length of their bodies. I couldn't find any dung later...

What do you think these are? Pup coyotes? Red foxes? Something else?

Thanks guys.

Yeah, we get a good share of coyotes here. That same neighbor left a couple of deer carcasses in back last year and it was like Woodstock for dogs back there for a week.

+1 Red Fox!

We used to have them in my neighborhood,

Recently they have been replaced by cottontail bunnies. I must admit I'd rather have the fox.

I saw my first red fox out here in the Santa Monica's a couple weekends ago. They are an introduced species on West Coast down here, but cool nonetheless. We have native grey foxes, but I have never seen one in the wild.

I have a family of foxes at my place now, trying to decide if they are more harm than good.

Foxes...When I was a kid, we killed them because they killed our chickens. Now I wish I had more because I don't have chickens and they keep the mice population down. Mice, squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs are out of control here even though we get a bald eagle in the yard every now and then. Wish those foxes lived here. Every time I see a fox now, I see him/her dead on the road a few days later. Apparently they are not fearful of cars. The deer here are tame as well...sometimes have to come to a complete stop to get them to move out of the road in my neighborhood.

We have a lot Red Foxes here. They aren't a threat, at least to the animals I own.

If you have outdoor cats, then foxes are not cool.

Wait until they call each other at night. Their cry makes the hair on the back of my neck stand straight out.

The Coyotes around here look like well cared for German Shepards.

Foxes are cool. There is a resident fox living in a borrow at Willow Springs Raceway between Turn 2 and T3. He's seen often popping up to watch the races.

Foxes are cherished in my community. They haven't been a threat to domestic pets (other than chickens), but do keep the rabbit and orchard rat populations down.

Coyotes are nasty. They are fearless of humans around here, and take any dog left outside between dust to dawn up to 60 pounds. Most are plagued with mange and almost hairless.

This one likes to sleep on my garden chair
