Very nice, indeed.
Your love for Farmer shows in your affectionate stories about her. I hurt just reading it. Best,

Retired, finally

Every now and then I'll have a dream featuring one of my former dogs. A dream so real, it's like there were there. Maybe they came back for a brief visit?
I hope they are saying "We'll be here, when you get here."

So sad for you all, good masters. Can't ask for anything more as a family member.
I dread the day. |

Last night after I had posted in the dog thread about "Duke", I was laying on the couch with my two Heelers cuddled up next to me like they always do. One of my favorite enjoyments in life. All of a sudden I had a wave of saddness hit me, when I realized my time with them is limited. Then I glanced over at my Toby's ashes and picture sitting on the bar. Teared up a little and held my two best buddies closer.

Losing your beloved pet has a way of tearing your guts out. They become such a large part of our everyday living that we sometimes forget to love them as much as we can. They are only with us for a short while, but during that time they love us completely. They don't know if we have had a good day or bad day. They are just happy to see us come home. That is unconditional love. Just writing this makes me tear up thinking of my beloved dogs that have passed. Thinking about the mortality of my current dogs doesn't make it easier. I have made it a habit of mine to never just step over or around one of my dogs without petting them. It adds up to lots of pets for them, but I haven't heard a complaint yet.
I am sorry for your loss Gassy. Farmer sounds like she was just a wonderful dog. R.I.P. Farmer, say hi to Macky, BooBoo, Sally, and Mushu for me.

While each of these threads are sad to read in someway I find them good also. I mean it makes me happy to see caring dog owners do the right thing and end the suffering of a good friend. And to stay with that pet to the bitter end is the repayment we make for all the years they unconditionally love us. I have been through this quite a few times and it's never easy and always has brought me to tears. But knowing it's the right thing to do takes some of the pain away. You will always have the memories and the next great chapter is only the local humane society away. Sorry for your loss.

I usually skip these threads because they are so hard to read. I clicked for some reason, though, and teared up reading your post. Farmer was a lucky girl.

Matt - what you said about petting your companion when stepping over/around them - yes - that's what they really love - your touch is what they deserve and is all they really ask for. Small price to pay.
I thought of something today I wanted to pass along.....there's no getting around the sadness and emptiness one feels when a companion is lost.....but your companion wouldn't want you to suffer......they would want you to celebrate the good times and memories. They would want you to move on as painful as it is. If you want to pay tribute to your companion - go to the shelter and save another life...best medicine one could ask for. Good to read everyone's posts here....it helps all of us I'm sure.
