Guess How Much Damage?

So at about 3pm today I'm sitting in my buddies restaurant and we hear the screech of tires and the sound of metal bending metal and then I see my truck lurch forward. We run for the door and I get outside just in time to see a silver/grey SUV heading down the street at a very fast rate of speed, front end waving goodbye and leaking antifreeze on the ground.

My buddy gets the licence plate number. The owner of the business across the street comes over and says "They smashed into you and took off down the street". I called the cops.

So lets guess how much damage there is. My appointment with the adjuster is Aug 1st @11:10

$1500 is my guess. Maybe more if the hitch is bent.

dan88911 07-21-2014 08:38 PM

$2500

John Rogers 07-21-2014 08:41 PM

Hard to say with those closeups. Park the truck on a level place, measure the frame rails in back from the ground up, measure the bed at the rear to see if all that is still level with an accurate level? If the hitch has bent there is a good chance the frame could be tweeked?

onewhippedpuppy 07-21-2014 08:41 PM

I'll bid $1800 Bob.

A dozen of beer man. If that happened here in New Zealand one of the local Maoris would hook it up to the tractor and pull that back out. Probably do it for free coz' it wuz his cuzin thats ran into it in the first place.

GWN7 07-21-2014 09:20 PM

John, I'll measure tomorrow. Too dark, too rainy and too many mosquitoes' right now.

I decided to see if I could track him by the trail of antifreeze he left. He went to the end of the block and turned North. I think I spotted a trail of antifreeze turning West into a back lane. It looked like a vehicle turned at a high rate of speed, missed the turn and hit the garage door. The red car is the owners car. I went home to get my camera and when I got back the owner was home.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406002228.jpg

I called my insurance company and the owner of the vehicle who hit me had already made a claim. I didn't get to ask what he (I'm assuming it is a he) said. (We have the same company). The police came and took a written statement. They will be taking statements from the two witnesses. I saw the idiots address on the police computer. So I know who/where they are. I wanted to take pictures of the front of their SUV but the police were there so I left them alone. :)

Bill Douglas 07-21-2014 09:23 PM

Good skills.

ledhedsymbols 07-21-2014 10:24 PM

I'm in for $5,000 CDN. I'll bet there is frame damage.

livi 07-21-2014 10:37 PM

Sorry about your truck. Hope it works out for the best.

NY65912 07-22-2014 03:26 AM

$4250 hidden damage.

LWJ 07-22-2014 04:11 AM

"How is your neck?"

Porsche-O-Phile 07-22-2014 04:20 AM

$3k. They'll try to stick you with $2k of it, then then sue the other party for $100k and settle for $5k plus no admission of wrongdoing. And they'll jack your premium up another $500 or so a year.

In Missouri that would be a felony leaving the scene of an accident.

Laneco 07-22-2014 07:07 AM

Drives into the back of a parked pickup truck...flees the scene...runs into his/her own garage door.

I'm thinking DUI.

angela

911SauCy 07-22-2014 07:13 AM

If its the same AllState adjuster I had, $500.

Hard to make a real estimate when you're putting body shop labor at $35/hour...I'm not kidding.

Agreed, but can't prove it.

When Chip and Jon arrived late to the scene the individual had probably sobered up.

strath44 07-22-2014 08:44 AM

good detective work!

I don't think even the most skilled stunt driver could have drifted around that corner and nailed that garage door quite a square on as this person has!!

Stick onto the constabulary like a left nut.

That's an immediate arrest not an investigation.
Whether he ran over a kid during his flight, or not, has nothing to do with his culpability.

GWN7 07-22-2014 08:51 AM

Update from the Police this morning: driver was a 16 yr old male with a graduated licence (that means his licence is gone now) driving his mom's 2006 Ford Escape. They did a field sobriety test and he passed (0 readings). He admitted to hitting me and hitting the garage (two points on his licence for each accident) and has two charges of failure to exchange particulars (8 points for each charge on his licence).

So he now will have 20 points on his licence which means the surcharge will be $2500. The surcharge is reduced by half each year your accident free. So it will take him 6 years to clear it off his licence and cost a total of $4900. If you don't pay it, the points don't go down. This is on top of what the judge will charge him ($250 per incident?) . He also has to pay the deductible on his moms vehicle.

Up here it's called "Failure to exchange information"

Falls under this part of the Highway Traffic Act:

155(3) The information required to be given under subsection (2) is

(a) the name and address of the driver giving the report;

(b) a statement as to whether the driver has a valid driver's licence or out-of-province driving permit and if so, the number of the licence or permit and the date of its expected expiration;

(c) a statement as to whether the vehicle being driven by the driver is validly registered, if the vehicle is required to be registered, and if so, the vehicle's registration number and date of the registration's expiration;

(d) the number of the driver's motor vehicle liability insurance policy and name of the insurer, if applicable; and

(e) if driver is not the vehicle's owner,

(i) the name and address of the owner and registered owner, if they are different, and

(ii) the number of the owner's or registered owner's motor vehicle liability insurance policy and name of the insurer, if applicable and if that information is known to the driver.

Took the truck to my body shop and the owner figures the side of the truck box will need to be replaced (It's wrinkled) and earliest they can start on it is Aug 25th.

I don't understand the 'surcharge' part of all this.
Could you explain please?

If this was my kid he wouldn't be driving again until he could buy his own car and insurance and room and board.

And get hisself a new a$$ 'cause the one god gave him is gone after I get home.

I do love irony: He was driving a Ford "Escape".

Oh: $3250.00 CDN on the repair.

I think the "surcharge" is a fine spread out over time.

So whether he has a license or not he still pays it.

URY914 07-22-2014 12:18 PM

I'm thinking high end and my number is $265,000. ;)
