Has the 356 Market Jumped the Shark?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to own it. It's a beautiful car, but from what I can tell it's not even a Porsche motor. Get rid of the A/C and that would be a fun ride, but $135,000 for a replica? Even if it's from Intermechanica, I just don't see the value. FWIW, I don't care that it's a replica and I think the build quality is awesome in the photos, but wow - maybe time to take some profits...

Hey, there are some real 356 bits in there... but not many. And it is half the cost of what a Real Speedster will run you... But for $135k I'd pay off my house *and* restore my '65 C coupe ...

I don't know about jumping the shark, but I almost made a fool of myself looking at one in Raleigh a few weeks ago. 1959 356 coupe, had a 912 engine and a so so purple paint job. He said he wanted 79 for it. I was getting ready to tell my wife we were buying another Porsche. Glad I looked at it on ebay first $79,000.

Likewise, had a chance to buy a 356B Super 90, restored, black over red, from a place in Santa Barbara many years ago. I think they wanted 13.5K at the time. Sigh. The cars and women we miss out on :--) Corrected per Speeder :--)

No such thing as a 356C super 90. That would be a 356B.

Whoa nelly! I always wanted a 356 but figured the only one I could afford would be a replica... now what?

Those $35,000 550 spyder replicas I see advertised at Beverly Hills Motoring are starting to look like a bargain!

I don't think the 356 has jumped the shark, but that replica has...certainly at that price tag. Maybe if it had some 4-cam engine bits, but I guess one of those engines alone is well past $100K. I know that Intermechanica has a reputation for quality. I'm just not a "rag top" guy. So I'd rather have a really nice "real" coupe of any year. I used to own a 1963 356 "C" that I acquired as part of a trade many years ago. As much as I loved it, it was too rough to hang on to, as I didn't have the $$$$ resources for a proper restoration and lost my storage space for it.

| G'day! |
I don't think you can base the 356 market on what replicas sell for can you? That said - the356 will always be one of the most coveted of all Porsches, and thus more valuable. As long as we're confessing regrets...mine is selling my '73 911T Tangerine coupe, Italian delivery, 2.4 factory carbed........in near perfect condition. Dumb dumb dumb. At least I still have the tub!

it was unsuccessfully offered for 75k a few months ago. i guess if you can't get 75, might as well not sell it for 135. | ||

It cuts both ways. I raced my Speedster for a season, auto crossed it, drove it all over and basically beat the he!, out of it. I've driven my coupe across country, as far north as Jasper, Alberta and south to Key West. Never had a thought about what a wreck would do to my net worth. Now I think about it, and it takes away some of the fun.

Funny you should ask, I got this email today: Hi, my name is Jessica Wells, a few months ago I had a 1961 Porsche 356 for sale on cars.com for $18,650. I wanted to sell it because my husband got sick and no one was driving it. He past away 1 week after I listed the car and I was so messed up, that's why I never answered your e-mail. I'm not over it but I'm felling a little better and I wanted to ask if you are still interested in buying the car. 1961 Porsche 356 $18,650 Mileage: 61,555 Body Style: Coupe Exterior Color: Green Engine: 4-cylinder Transmission: Manual Drivetrain: 4x2/2-wheel drive Features: AM/FM Radio -- Jessica Wells Charleston, SC So should I jump on it
