Good luck deer proofing anything guys. Short of installing a prison style fence and hunting the interior to oblivion, they will find a way in. Preservation efforts that are long on good intentions but short on common sense have made the rats with antlers a huge issue in much of the USA. My first introduction to road rats was in the mid '70s...bombing 80 - 85 mph down a steep grade in a Renault R10...heading into Salt Lake City.
A family of them crossed in front of me, I hit the last one...took a 1/4 mile or so to stop. It destroyed my front end and the rat was caught way under the front pan.
I looked back at the path of blood, guts, teeth, fur, and eyeballs...pulled it out, tossed it into the ditch and kept on my way.

Just about hit one outside of Bryce Canyon in Utah a couple of weeks ago. Critter came flying up a hill and onto the road at a leisurely pace. First threshold braking I've done on the street in a long time. Right as I'm starting to let off the brakes my wife yells "Baby!" Little one followed mama onto the road and was hidden by the A pillar as I was focused on the doe. I absolutely would have hit the baby if my wife hadn't yelled.

Ohio State Police did a study with these "deer whistles" a long time ago. The cruisers with the whistles had more deer hits than those without.

More on topic, I saw a deer run across the track at a Road Atlanta DE once.

I don't think a deer would equate a whistle with danger. No predator whistles. If they could make a wolf or coyote sound or maybe a bear that would get the attention of the deer. Maybe the alert sound of other deer.

In my experience, they don't even equate a rifle shot with danger. Hell, much of the time you can deck one of them, and their buddies just stand around like nothing happened. They are not very bright...

Consensus among modern game biologists is that North America now sports more deer than when the Pilgrims landed. Hunter supported recovery efforts have been that wildly successful. Unfortunately, we have now reached a point where the very same game managers who orchestrated this recovery are not, in many cases, allowed to manage the herds anymore.

That responsibility has been assumed by the voting public in many jurisdictions, thanks to the efforts of organizations like PETA, ALF, and others. They would have an uninformed public manage with their hearts, rather than trained biologists manage with science. The result is inevitable - overpopulation with all of the difficulties attendant to that.

It's only natural to focus on that which we see, or have experience with, or know someone who has experience with. So we talk about hitting them with our cars. Yeah, that sucks for us and the deer, but the real tragedy is happening in woods, silently, out of sight. Winter starvation, chronic wasting disease, and many other causes of death directly related to overpopulation take far more deer in a year than our cars. Or hunters.

It would strike me as ironic beyond words if this driver were a member of one of the animal "rights" organizations. I wonder if he can tap into them to help him buy a new car...

I was talking with a good friend of mine today about the latest deer strike at Summit Point...granted I have not been there in a few years.... we got to talking about perimeter fencing, we agreed, that on the approach to the entrance there is some solid fence....

Then I decided to do a google drive around :eek:
