Track day plus deer

LiveLeak.com - Deer Pulverized by Porsche at Speed

Add check windshield washer fluid to track day check list.

If you look close in the stewards stand you will see me working. Actually I was kinda chilling until all hell broke loose...red flags ambulances. That was a mess. I'm surprised it took so long to show up here.

Don Ro 07-26-2014 10:11 AM

Road rats.
I saw a buddy hit one on his motorcycle.

widgeon13 07-26-2014 10:54 AM

Whata mess!!!

Aerkuld 07-26-2014 12:07 PM

Oh, so THAT'S the "red mist" they tell you to avoid on the track - Yuck!
Both drivers were very lucky, glad nobody was hurt.

Did you hear that dOOd at the end..."Effing deer!"

I don't know why those deer cannot understand they are not allowed onto the track....effing deer!

RIP Bambi :(

Yea, they need to have a deer crossing area signs for the deer.

motion 07-26-2014 12:44 PM

What track is that? Why isn't there a deer fence around the perimeter of the land?

the worst part of this is the car most likely is not covered by insurance, that's a big loss. the best part is everyone was ok,

They like to add a little extra sport to the hobby.

Seriously, it's beyond retarded not to have something in place to keep animals off the track in an area with a deer population. He's really lucky it didn't come through the windshield and decapitate him.

Summit Point, there is some fencing I think, Its been a few years since I was there last...

Occasionally deer get on track at Lime Rock, I have personally caused the demise of a Raccoon at Watkins Glen. Also a Skunk got caught up in my trailer wheels just outside of Lime Rock...everybody avoided walking near my trailer that day ;)

Keeping small critters off the track is almost impossible, larger animals should be easier ( i think)

Man, that guy ended up with hole in his wallet, and no chance for a meal. What a bummer, glad he's ok.

matt f 07-26-2014 02:10 PM

Very expensive to deer proof a racetrack.

mattdavis11 07-26-2014 02:18 PM

Yep, not sure what it costs there in PA, but it was 10K a mile in soft soil slightly south of here. He was fencing deer in and everything else out. It still didn't work.

VaSteve 07-26-2014 02:21 PM

Video is mislabelled...its summit point in WV. Just over the Va line. Deer have always been a problem up there.

That was the second deer strike that day. This one was likely looking for the little one that got hit earlier in the day.

Look on jalopnik for the corvette that hit one in 2012. Same spot

Yes, well some genius needs to apply a little *Moneyball* to that problem.

Let's see, (scratching chin): Wrongful death suit and one totaled Porsche= 5 or 10 million dollars, depending on age and projected earnings of dead driver. Plus we need to hose off the track, holding up a paying DE.

Oh wait, you thought that waiver that everyone signs actually prevents anyone from suing a race track for a negligent safety hazard? Hahaha....no.

weseeeee 07-26-2014 02:26 PM

That was nasty! I bet the smell was wicked after a few days.

10k a mile seems awfully inexpensive.
A 6 ft fence will not even challenge those buggers.
Need minimum 8 ft with distally curved top.
At 100k a mile it would be a bargain.

I used to really love driving on the tracks at Summit Point, but the frequent wildlife encounters and trees close to the track, not so much.
