Clothes for HOT weather yard work?

I am looking for a source for a hot weather hat for my yard work. I want something that will hold up to the dirt and wear and tear of yard work. A sweat band or maybe a bandanna will help, I am looking for ideas.

I don't care at all about style. I would wear pink Hello Kitty shirt and green polka dot shorts and a Barney the Dinosaur hat if it keeps me cool temperature wise.

I want a new hat with a LARGE sweat band and brim that I can get wet and a keep the sun off of my neck. I normally just wear a t-shirt and either jeans or shorts.

Most of what I find with Google is for hiking or runners. Nothing wrong with that except that except the price and they get all about looks and style. All I want is function.

As soon as I add yard work to the search I get web sites that are about yard work itself and not the clothes or hats. My Google Foo is weak today.

Get something with a wide brim to help shade your face.
You may want a hat that also shades the back of your neck.
It should be lightweight and should have good air flow for natural cooling.
Something like this, IMO.

Yea, a suit and tie and a pith helmet.

Maybe not.

That hat on top looks good. I will order that.

Nike Dri-Fit knit outer layer. It works wonders.

Stay covered, long sleeves and long pants. Places like REI have lots of hats, but I think most places that out doors greal haved hats. Like the one above with some venting on top will be good when there's a breeze.

Glen, go to academy and look at hats. They have lots with big brims and mesh and such. Good prices too.

Mississippi in the summer time. 90+ in both temp and humidity. I'm sweating now just thinking about walking outside. First rule is no cotton. WalMart has some decent enough and cheap enough short/shirts for yard work. Starter or Russell. For the hat it's a straw cowboy hat with a vented crown. Then add one of these sweat liners to the front. Their mildly adhesive and will stay put in just about any hat/cap. -J

I like to wear white "painters pants" as they are rugged, protect the knees and inexpensive. Yeah, they do get "dirty" but ain't that what its all about?

Hire them. Much more effective than a hat.

I'm a HUGE tester of warm weather gear and have been an official gear tester of some large outdoor clothing firms. I second what Vash says. By far the best sun hat I've ever tried was made by Sun Day Afternoons. I use the "Sport Hat", though their original Adventure hat is their most popular. As Vash points out, it covers the head entirely, has a Coolmax sweat band, is UPF 50+, has cooling vents, etc. It is THE sun protection hat to have IMO.

Sun Hats for Men

In second, I'd choose a hat by Outdoor Research. I've used their Helios Sun hat and their Sun Bucket. The Sun Bucket is one of my favorite hats. Great features, a good sun protection...though the nape of your neck might get sun because of the lack of a flap. Best thing about Outdoor Research is their warranty...LIFETIME. And they honor it quickly, too...with no questions asked.

You can't go wrong with either of these companies offerings IMO.

FWIW, I've recently (within the last year) tried the greatest warm weather shirt technology I've ever tried. CooL Q Zero technology by Mountain HardWear. The Chiller Long Sleeve shirt (converts to short sleeve) is made with thousands of small, blue rings on it. When your sweat touches the rings, they puff up an actively keep you cool. It worked so well that a couple of times I was in the shade I had to move back into the sun. Yes..it works that well. Incredible and hard to believe. And stylish too! Nice enough to wear to dinner.

Underarmor makes a "charged cotton" or some such shirt. I bought 6 of them to wear outside because they are comfortable to sweat in. I'm outside at least half of the year. I don't do anything special except wear the highest SPF sunscreen that I can find, which is usually in the women's makeup section of the drugstore. Otherwise, you're going to burn and burn badly. When that happens, Rite Aid sells a good aloe vera gel. Long pants, gloves, and a good short sleeve shirt with plenty of Ban du Soleil or Nutrogena sunblock is how I roll.

Thanks. This is the info I was wanting to hear. And from a real tester. Thanks!

I swear by Tilley hats (Tilley.com) and have for 20 years. I wear the T4 in cotton duck camping, doing yard work, at the beach, basically a lot. Living in Colorado and being bald, I want to protect my head.

When it gets dirty, I through it in the washing machine. Never had a single complaint.
