Dang it! Crashed on my bicycle and forgot to monkey roll!

Wifey and I went out for a long bike ride. At the crest of a hill, her front wheel got wedged in a crack in the road and down she went. Good thing she was wearing her helmet correctly because she bit it hard. I was riding behind and not far enough to think about doing a monkey roll. I ran into her thighs and over the handlebar I went. I don't know how my shoes got unclipped but I was off my bike, bounced on the road on my palms and knees then somehow landed on my right hip.

No broken bones but lots of road rash and sore joints. No Crossfit for her for a couple of weeks and I have to wear a wrist splint and drag my right leg like Igor. Shoulda monkey rolled!

Glad you both are reasonably ok. A little upset you didn't monkey roll. I thought that was instinct for all of us Pelicans at this point.

I went over the bars a month ago, had an X-ray of my left wrist & it was negative. My wrist is still really sore, made my dirt bike vacation to Montana last week difficult at times. I'll give it another month to see if it improves. I really need to quit injuring myself now that I'm pushing 50, takes forever to heal.

I hope you guys heal quicker than I do, take care.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys. Before I ride again, I'm going to cue up Sniper's monkey roll tutorial and commit it to memory.

I once hit a sheep at high speed in Wales, on the last day of a 3-month tour of Europe and the UK. The bike collapsed but I flew over the bike and monkey rolled and was just fine. Only my feet were sore where they broke through the leather pedal straps. (This was a while ago.) A nice lady drove me to the nearest train station and I finished the last leg by train. Strangely, I hit the only black sheep in a herd of white sheep.

I laugh also, but not because of the fall but laughing because you ran into your wife's thigh. That must hurt like heck (for her, not you). I laugh because I dragged my wife out for a ride long ago, and she ran into me. I forget that most people can't handle the bike well inches away from another rider. She paniced and ran into my handle bar. We both were leaning toward each other trying to stay up for that second. In that split second, the though went through my head and realized that we were going to eat siht at that very moment. Eat siht we did and I got a whole bunch of siht after that. A bit of road rash for the both of us, but she was pissed because she had to go to work the next day and needed to run a big meeting with a big scabs on both knee and the lower side of her leg. She wanted to wear a particular dress. She hadn't ridden a bike with me since. Its been over 10 years. Oh well..

I hope you both get well soon.

Tell her Chris Froome crashed out of TdF the same way (front wheel, crack in pavement) so she needn't feel bad. Then again no one proceeded to run over him . . .

She's not too happy with me for running her over. The crash seemed to happen in slow motion yet I could not avoid hitting her. I hope we'll be ok by Aug 17 because we're paid up to ride the a Tour of Napa Valley. Oh and her bike is going to need new brifters and front wheel needs truing.

Keep riding, you guys should be fine. Gotta keep moving. the dry scab is gonna to hurt in the first 2-3 minutes of riding, but it will go away. Its only normal that she isn't happy with you. Now if my wife ran my ugly ass over, I could careless. I am sure you feel the same way.

I must say that I was sorely disappointed after opening this thread. After Vash's recent GoPro thread...I was expecting some spectacular video . 30+ years ago back in college, WAY before I had learned that a proper "monkey roll" could save ya from a nuclear blast....I perfected the "swan dive"....not NEARLY as effective imo. Who installs storm grates that run parallel to the curb ? My narrow road bike wheel caught one wrong and me (shirtless and w/o a helmet back then) performed a beaut right into the side walk just a block from my apt. My whole chest was rashed all to hell, and when I got to my apt and looked in the mirror, I had a nice 1/4" gash on me chinny chin chin too. Have had a beard ever since so I can't see where the stitches were (chin didn't hurt at all), but I can still remember how my chest felt for a few days....taking showers was a WHOLE lot of fun. Hope ya heal up fast....and thanks for bring back the memories

I have had my share of crashes over the years. They average once a year, some nasty ones, most were just nasty road rashes. The worst was coming around a really fast turn at the bottom of a hill pulling the train and see a little bit of water right in front of you. Before one can think, OH SIHT, we were sliding all over the road. Road rash started from my ass all the way down to the ankle on one side of my leg. Oh, arm and shoulder too. I know all about monkey roll, but I have never been able to react fast enough to do it to prevent leaving my skin on the tarmac. Never. Crashes happen so damn fast.

Sorry about your crash. I feel your pain.

I have posted this before, but I had a spill downhilling last summer and broke a couple of ribs. No fun driving home a hundred miles in the 911...

I read the heading and thought I was going to hear about broken collarbones. Glad that didn't happen but the road rash will hurt in the shower for a little while.

A wiser rider than me (no, not Cavendish) told me years ago never to let go of the bars in a crash. Yeah right, like I could ever think that through as I'm going down....
