Just got into town...looking for work?

I spent a bunch of time in the car this weekend listening to Outlaw country. There were several songs where a guy was drifting and working odd jobs (often fishing on a big boat). Some of this music is old and some is artistic license of course. But are there really jobs that you can just drift/roll into town and do?

I mean everything I have done has required SSNs, applications, drug tests, forms and HR BS. Sure there's day laborer, but is there other work that an "outlaw" can breeze into town and do?

A guy I hired to help with the remodel of a building was one of those. He was a writer, and worked at whatever to make a living until he could live off of writing. He worked on a crab boat in Alaska, did something on a sailboat in the Caribbean, threw dynamite out of helicopters to start avalanches, made sails for a guy on Lake Champlain and a lot of far less interesting things - all kinds of stuff. By the time he left me he was a decent electrician.

Dish washing window cleaning lawn crew work farm hand work etc

Especially if your English doesnt have a "bad" accent and your skin is the proper color wasy enough to say you got mugged the last place you were and need some cash to get replacement ss card etc. Large employer with a HR office you probably cant do it with but any single person company it would be understandable

Before computers it would have been easy. The laws were different and no computer checks.

Now it would be a lot tougher.

If you wanted to work as a REAL cowboy and had your own tack or diswashers at a local restaurant, or day laborer maybe still today.

add stagehand to this-
show up at the back stage door before load in and ask if the crew list is full-
did this on vacation in Dublin. girlfriend was pissed but I had a great day working on a stage with a bunch of folks I had never met; and I learned a bit about Ireland I wouldn't have otherwise.

A buddy & I used to kid we wanted to be migrant workers. Think about it. You could go from Washington, (apples), to Maine, (potatoes), and north to south and pick something. Have work just about year round.

BTW Outlaw Country & Willies Roadhouse are two excellent channels, and I don't even care for country music, well new country.

PDR, Paintless Dent Repair. They pop up right after a hail storm, then they are gone. Granted it does take skill, but I can imagine a good one could roll up to a dealership just hit by a hail storm, knock out one for half price/free then be set for awhile if he passed the test.

I worked for a number of years in a Bar, first as busboy, then waiter, then Bartender, I'm not sure if the owner even knew my last name..

If I wanted to, I could head down to the docks near my house early tomorrow, and get work on a a fishing boat... set some nets, drag for a awhile, haul the nets.. get good and messy..... and get a hand full of cash after really long day...

Cash businesses are more able to hire off the books workers ....Anything where you are getting a check.... not happening anymore....

Day laborers...

Etc...

I went to work in Canada for awhile stuffing insulation bags.
Made up a number, a high school and shaaboom ! hired (late 1970s)
I would freelance as a mechanic in the south west, and various other trades to support my nomadic habits after Vietnam.
I must have bought fixed and sold 300 VW vehicles .
