Home Security
We live in a very safe neighborhood, however, my wife got spooked the other day by a story and is insisting on some sort of home security to prevent/deter a burglary. I thought I'd throw it out to the PPOT brain trust to see what the prevailing wisdom is....
Firearms are a non-starter. I'm reluctant to spend a lot of money on a monitored home security system, but I'm interested in hearing opinions on this. How 'bout those wifi camera systems... thoughts?

Go with something like this, but in 40 cal.
Just clean up the mess when you get home.

If you want to go the really cheap route, they say a security company sign at the front of the property is one of the best deterrents. But that is the really cheap route.

Firearm protects you when you are there. When seconds count the police are usually at least a few minutes away. But if it is a non starter then you and the wife have made that choice. Besides wont do anything when you arent there
A non monitored system may give you a recording of the miscreants. Or it may give the miscreants more stuff to sell A monitored system w panic button is best. Can alert you or police/fire/health for a variety of issues. Otherwise insurance. Docunent posessions w pics or vids. Small firebox for papers and jewelry but be sure it is properly secured etc. |

I'd recommend prayer, then.
Not very effective, but I hear it makes people feel better.

A barking dog and a LOADED burglar alarm...hard to beat imo...anything else is just fooling yourself

Seriously, I agree... the best first thing you can do is get some impossible-to-kick-in doors... steel preferably... with steel frames and long throw deadbolts... no glass in and around the door unless you're gonna have a keyed deadbolt on the inside and you don't leave the key in it ever. Every door needs to adhere to these qualifications, not just the front. If you're not married to the idea of storm doors, ditch them and mount the steel doors as outswinging doors. Even more impossible to kick in. On windows low enough for easy break in access, figure out a way to make it more difficult or impossible to get in. We've got bars on the only two of ours easy enough to get to without a ladder. They're not the typical jaildoor type, they follow the lines of the mullions and don't stand out much. The dudes that built castles would laugh at cameras... they'd spend their efforts making the doors/drawbridge stronger, right? ![]()

$12 on ebay. And the phone number works.

Cant argue with the dog suggestions. My three are the best alarm system!
A visible camera system is a great deterrent. .

I have a camera in a vacation home, detects motion and sends an email/pic. Great for peace of mind.

Good neighbors help also.. When I have to leave town, I let my buddy next door and across the street know what cars should be there, course the camera keep an eye too, and my neighbors also let me know so I can keep an eye open.
