Maniac in Cayman
Saturday, US 23 Northbound between Toledo OH and Ann Arbor, MI, just north of the Michigan border.
Speed limit is 70, left lane traffic typically cruises 80-85. I'm in the passing lane going 80ish, behind another car. We are about to pass a Semi in the right lane. Suddenly, a black Cayman flashes by us on the shoulder, passes the semi then cuts across both lanes of traffic and disappears into the distance. Tons of dust and debris kicked up from the shoulder, he might have even gotten off the edge and hit the dirt. I kid you not, I would say his speed was roughly 135mph. He left us like were were standing still. WTF is wrong with people? I like to drive fast, but not passing other cars with families inside on a freaking public highway! Whoever you are, thanks for giving P-car owners a bad name jerk. Hope you don't kill someone with your idiocy.

Amen! A great example of a dumba$$ with no idea or frame of reference for closing speed. The hospital where my wife works in Atlanta currently has a young male with an open skull fracture from wrapping his new vet around a tree. At least this guy in the hospital is going out the door in parts as an organ donor....

Not often but when I was a teen, I did that kind of thing (at much, much lower speeds) 2 or 3 times. It was very stupid, but I don't think I was probably going much more that 75 or 80 when I did it (thank goodness for slow gutless cars). I was a stupid kid. I wouldn't think this guy could use that excuse. It's a shame the cops didn't get him doing it.

Used to travel to Midland, Michigan a lot. It was fairly common for this to happen north of Flint. Doing the limit +10 (80 mph) and getting passed in the grass. I would worry about my tires, driving out there in the trash.

He might have been trying to run out the fuzz. Very common in Phoenix and sports bikes.

Been a long time since I've been in MI but I specifically recall how terrible the highways were. Certainly nothing I'd feel comfortable blasting along on "at speed". Too many ruts, potholes, cracks, etc. to say nothing of the sheer stupidity for doing stuff like that on a busy public road. Maybe the road conditions are better in that part of the state (?) but based on what I remember they're not anything that would contribute to vehicle control in a positive way.

I had a similar experience a few years back. Guy in a sports car came up behind me so quickly on the interstate I thought he was going to rearend me and then he swerved away and went around me in the breakdown lane. No one else on the road, very strange behavior.
Just today I was in Albany NY and some idiot has to turn left across my lane of traffic to beat the light (he's coming towards me), goes right up an access ramp to the interstate the wrong way. I have no idea what happened to him just hope he didn't end up killing some innocent oncoming driver. Lots of crazies out there and I hate to see them driving fast cars as well, gives us all a bad name. |

Me and my new to me 540i/6spd were almost totaled in this same manner last week...
By a white Gallardo doing about 140 in a 55. In left lane, look to merge to center: clear, look again: clear, begin merging and see white flash come around semi-truck behind me, into center lane. Got back in the left lane with inches to spare...

I used to do stupid stuff like that on my motorcycle until a very valid point was brought up. My antics were usually around Austin and a friend and motorcycle shop owner mentioned that the car I just passed by going on the shoulder could be a state representative who just got a new reason for hating motorcycles and passing a new law against us. Be it exhaust noise or turn signals or helmets or whatever.
I read an article yesterday about a Virginia politician introducing a bill to thwart “rolling coal” after a diesel truck did it to him in his Nissan Leaf. Be careful who you piss off!

It's never been done to me, but I'd support that.

Grew up in Mich and that's new to me.
Michigan drivers don't usually do that. I've only seen the left shoulder used for making illegal U-turns during a slowdown. However they will get up, flash lights, and ride your butt like it's Nascar night at any speed. But rarely have I seen maneuvers such as that mentioned. That is Cali-style driving. |
