I am. And I am required to undergo a pilot physical every 24 months.

My physical is currently due. At my last physical, in 2012, the doc told me, "Get your eyes checked before you come back. I doubt you will pass next time."

They don't do an eye "exam" for a 2nd or 3rd class physical. They only make you look at the chart.

My chart looks like this:

Actually, I have no trouble reading the computer screen or reading normal text at a normal distance. I do have trouble focusing within 9 inches of my nose, and trouble with very small print*. My dad went through the same thing, at about the same age.

My focus point for 8 point text, printed from Microsoft Word, is about 11 inches.

Go to an optometrist. They can often tell if you have any other health issues just by looking into your eye. My brother in law does a very through exam and has found potential stroke issues looking into patience eyeballs.

I go to an Eye doc, started wearing glasses at 5, went to the same doc until my mid 40s (would joke with him about remembering when he was tall) when he retired..

While the eye doc I do go to is a beautiful woman, she is a real ophthalmologist and her exams are very thorough, more thorough than the annual exams I got in the Navy, frankly, with the exception of getting contacts so I could fly NVG's more comfortably.

I get the exam every two years, very comprehensive. The eye glass place I go to won't honor your eye glass prescription if it is over two years old.

Lenscrafters and stores similar charge ridiculously high prices. $300 for frames? "But they are designer." BS they are made in China the same way for the last 40 years. I go to America's Best. $70 for an exam and 2 pair of glasses. Yes they try to up sell you, but it is still at least a reasonable end price.

OK, simple eye test,

Is this a modified Allard or some kit car?

Yes there really is a car in the picture if you look carefully.

Thanks guys.
I think since it has been so long since I had a thorough exam from which to draw a base-line, I may opt for a doctor instead of a discount place. My next-door neighbor is also a pilot and wears glasses.... I may ask him who he uses locally.

Same deal here. At Walmart it's a young Asian hottie and at the Pearl it's a smoking mid 30's to possibly even 40's Indian woman.

Both have great personalities but the Indian one has that level of maturity and sex appeal that makes it really hard to focus on anything, pun intended.

So maybe the dating advice for young guys who can't find a nice girl is to go get an eye exam.

Hmmm, evidently there is a place called University of South Carolina.
Despite the obvious trademark infringement of USC, it has a teaching hospital and a school of opthamology.
2 locations, one downtown and one at Parkridge.

Wait, are you implying that the University of South Carolina (Founded 1801) is infringing on a trademark of University of Southern California (Founded 1880)??

Either way, these USC offices are in Columbia and I am in the upstate.
Too far away.

Best best is to go to a full ophthalmologist rather than an optometrist though.
^^ This every 2 years if you are over 50. Optometrist is great for vision tuning and common issues like glaucoma. Ophthalmologists have more extensive training to detect and diagnose disease early.

That's it 'zackly. Remember the real USC (So Cal) is in a different time zone. Makes all the difference

My wife, also a pilot, has a very challenging prescription. Her eye doc uses a retinal imaging machine instead of the drops. They charge a little extra for it, but there's no after effects like with the drops.

^^^^^^This^^^^^^^^My wife and I separately had very good experience with the actual exam; specifically the available hours and the thoroughness of the attending doctor. Then with prescription in hand the eye wear selection was huge, the sales person very knowledgeable and really took their time to ensure good fitment. Honestly, the prices were the cheapest, the service much, much better than the 'chain' stores........... no reason to go anywhere else.

I remember the flight I knew I was going to need glasses like it was yesterday.

I went to the eye doc the very next day. He does his thing (the whole pilot/glasses thing is very serious in the military) and says to me: 20/25.

My vision went pretty much straight to 20/200 (correctable to 20/20, no other issues) in the next three years, where it has stayed, more or less.

I'm type 2 diabetic so I go to an eye doctor every year.

My co-work swears by Costco for her eye test.

My Dr. gives me the prescription and I run past the crazy overpriced glasses in the lobby, go home and order them online (zenni) at a fraction of the cost. If you are going to do that you need to get your PD (pupil distance) it is super important but not on your prescription, your Dr. may give it to you if you ask. It is not imposable to measure yourself, much easier if you have someone else measure it for you (doesn't have to be a Dr.)
