Blow out or defect??

Hello PP brain trust!!

Please take a look at this picture, do you think this was caused by a mfg defect or did we hit something? Absolutely no damage to the rim. This is on my wife's car and there is less than 1000 miles on the tire.
18" Michelin
Thanks!

I can't answer your question, but my local tire guys tell me that Michelin is the best supplier to deal with, for customer satisfaction.

Good luck with this.

Yep. Pothole. You can see the bubble happened. This is almost always due to a pothold breaking the bead.

I am voting pot hole, or perhaps a parking curb. I am amazed at the people who park hard against curbs I see tire deformity all the time in this area of the tire, especially if the wheel is turned.

At first, I was gonna say that this is your big clue... in a joking way, however. And there are guys here who have regaled us with stories about how their wives drive like maniacs and can never seem to steer around a pothole or anything else in the road because of their speed and/or obliviousness.

But then I looked at it a little closer, and the way the left end of that hole curls upward slightly and has such clean edges makes me think it was cut... with a knife or something similar.

I say defect. I hit a pothole so hard I bent my 17" rim but did not cause a flat and it was a Michelin time as well.

With less than 1000 mi on a new tire I would expect Michelin to replace it. The warranty here (Canada ) covers all Michelin tires for a year no charge after that they are prorated.I just got 4 new Michelins no charge with 12000 mi on them as they started to crack between the tread elements. I had to visit 2 different M dealers though to get one to agree.

Thats the result of an impact on a low profile tire.

It was cut. By the rim. Punched it right out.

Are you sure? I've seen wheels that look ok, but spin them on the balancer and it's a different story.
