Or have a revolver.....my wake at nite firearm is a hammerless .357. Point and boom.

All we need is enough time to react and defend our family.
So we had wrought iron window and door guards installed.
The doors have dead-bolts.
The way I look at any home entry is just to give me time to grab the revolver from the nightstand, call 911.
I am hoping any attempt to enter the home will make enough noise to wake me &
give me time to defend.

I live on a second floor, would like to do something like a floor safe, did you install that flange yourself or was it a factory option?

Totally agree, 99% sure I would be able to rack my 9mm. Unfortunately 99% sure my wife wouldn't.
I have plans to get a small/medium size .357 and load it with .38's for her.

Sorry I'm not quite sure what you mean by flange. I bolted the safe to my bed frame. All I had to do was drill the frame and the side of the safe. It took a bit to get thru the safe wall as it's pretty thick stuff. Use a sharp drill!!

I have a neighbor who didn't believe me about the round in chamber. He went with me to the range, I had him lay his spoon on the bench rest with an empty chamber, I had mine hot in a holster. I called contact and two other friends started rapid fire for distraction. By the time he'd placed his first shot, I'd easily placed three well-timed shots into my target.

As has been mentioned, a good DAO revolver is pretty much as good as it gets for personal/home defense if you're not able to spend significant amounts of time training.
Seriously, obscene amounts of time.

While the .357 can shoot .38s and are cheaper to practice with...ALWAYS follow up with at least two full cylinder loads of .357. The shock to the web in the hand and the audible report are also quite different. Trigger pull on single and double action are also not quite the same.

Something to consider, and why I prefer a .45 auto to magnums...it is absolutely TAME by comparison to the recoil of my big, heavy revolvers...couldn't imagine shooting a .357 in a much smaller, lighter spoon and .38 Special just don't cut it imo. Now a .44 Special does begin with a "4", so that "might" work . Nuthin' beats a 12ga if one is in doubt imo....

I don't own guns (nothing against them; just don't own one). I do have a katana sitting in the corner next to my bed, within arms' reach. And a broadsword hanging on the wall going out of the room. I might be at a disadvantage going against an intruder, but at least I know none of my kids will be hit by an errant round fired by me.

Looking at this:
Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Security Products :: RAPiD™ Safe & Accessories :: RAPiD™ Safe

Seems like a fast access with decent safety. Anyone seen one of these?

Glaser safety rounds. Bang on contact and don't go thru the walls and down the road to maim that poor ethnic child......

Interesting, Joe Bob.

Curiosity has the better of me...if they don't go through a piece of sheetrock, how effective are they in terms of stopping power? Almost seems akin to salt rock in a shotgun.

Oh they WILL go thru sheetrock. Just that the sheetrock will be rocked HARD. The Glaser will penetrate and the item hit will absorb all the energy and if it is living and breathing it will fall down. Like being hit with a baseball bat as opposed to a thrusting pointy weapon.

The debris just won't continue down the road. Lot's of ballistic reports on the web. Nicknamed as a the "Safety Round".

I don't believe so. This particular one was a gift brought back to me from Japan by a close Army buddy. I had told him it's one of my life's dreams to go to Japan and have a sword made specifically for me. This was not exactly that (obviously), but was still one hell of a gesture. As such, it is my favorite blade, and I have many.

Ok, got it. So, it'll go through the first object hit (panel of sheetrock), but will not go through the next. Correct? That does seem to be good for a home defense round.

Here's my problem with revolvers: take a gun novice who has fired the gun before, but not recently, to the range. Put the gun on the table in front of them, put a silhouette target 15ft away and have them unload as if it were an attacker. I bet the bottom-left corner of that paper will be chewed up real good. The human-shaped solhouette, not so much.

I do agree that a semi-auto is not good without lots of practice to go with it.

I'm pro-shotgun for the above reasons. Of course, there's always the short-stroke argument to that plan. You can't win... unless you're willing to practice a lot.
