It's amazing how many hospitals do not have an appropriate protocol for dealing with such a situation, but then they'd rather keep the customers happy..

I guess we will never know if they just got complacent just once or if the procedure was just not adequate.
It makes the health care workers that travel to Africa and work among many infected patients more amazing. How do they go to a hostile environment like that and NOT get infected and yet in ideal conditions two workers get infected?

My son was in Iowa for a 4 day week end - drove one of the combines but mostly the tractor pulling the grain wagons. Long days - 18 hours. He does this wry year during harvest. Sunday night they went out for dinner. That night they all had serious intestinal issues (32 feet of grunt) including fevor. I thought it was food poisoning. Fevor could suggest a stomach flu. He stopped puking yesterday and his fevor broke so I flu him home. He's in bed now and hasn't shown any signs of illness except being real tired.
Now you parents, question. Would you have flown him home at the earliest opportunity or wait till he got better? He does not have Ebola and most likely isn't contagious...maybe. In this case I told my wife to keep him in Iowa - that it wasn't fair to the 120 others on board in case he could pass the bug but for those of you with a ginger wife (or for that matter any wife) the momma instinct supercededs all else. She wanted her baby home. Period. Do you see where I'm going with this? |

I see your point.
Your son will get perfect care in Iowa and there is nothing his Momma can for him do but fuss over him. You are right it is unfair to expose all the other folks on the airplane to any illness.

and if a healthy Momma wants to be with him to fuss then she can go to him.
Hope your son is feeling better soon and I hope we don't see 4+ new cases of Ebola from these 2 nurses

Mike - it was probably NORO virus.
Back on topic. I expect more of the nurses are going to test positive for Ebola in Dallas. No regular hospital in the US is prepared. The latest pictures from Dallas show they have set up a "portable/inflatable" Level 4 containment facility. And the people treating the nurse are in level 4 suits.

So this is a second Healthcare worker who got it? --Not good.
The CDC director said: "We could've sent a more robust hospital infection control team and been more hands-on with the hospital from day one about exactly how this should be managed," I'm thinking; you mean this hospital did NOT get massive support from the CDC, from the get-go? --wholly kahrap on a cracker...

So.....when does his flight get in?
Ebola is one of those situations where the best decision for an individual is the worst decision for everyone else. For example, Duncan came to the US to get himself the best treatment possible, in the process, he exposed hundreds to the virus and infected at least two people.

The experts at CBC and PPOT said this was not going to happen.

that photographer got flown into the US. he is recovering. his parents said the thing that probably saved him was simply fluids. he is on the mend.
i think those two health care workers are in for a tough time..but will recover. personally, those health care workers put themselves in harm's way to help and do their jobs..i'm rooting for them with all my heart..and i am glad they have access to the best health care, here.

i do..but let me clarify. by "best healthcare"..i mean for those with Ebola. i'd rather be here than on a cot in some hut, or makeshift tent hospital.
the images coming from ground zero are sobering.

It is "better" now. They should have moved Duncan to either Kansas or Galveston, TX where permanent Level 4 facilities exist.
OR The CDC should have provided a portable level 4 facility on DAY 1! From the pictures on the news this morning, they have the portable plastic bubble setup in Dallas. And it looks like they are using Level 4 suits.

My wife poked around a bit yesterday and learned that the USA has only 4 facilities fully certified by the CDC to handle infectious diseases. This would include sewer. Not sure about the rest of the world.

It feels pretty Amazing that this would happen in US. From the reports, true or false, the handling of the patient and the environmental Contact was completely incompetent from an Ebola Point of view. It could probably happen in any western country, but still both slightly surprising and scary.

Second HC worker was on a flight Monday. Frontier Air from Cleveland to Dallas. No symptoms while on flight, but got fever the next day.

Just heard on the news that the second health worker took a flight from OH to TX and had a fever the next day!!! and that those on the flight have been asked by the CDC to seek help if they feel sick
