Is haggerty good for liability coverage also?

Lots of threads on Haggerty, and other collector car insurance companies.

I understand the upsides: you have "agreed" upon value. Prices are lower.

Can anyone comment on the liability aspects? I assume that Haggerty also provides your liability coverage, correct? And then your personal umbrella or other liability policy kicks in. Right?

I never see comments on the liability component. Has anyone been in a possibly at-fault accident, while under haggerty? Did it work out ok? Did they defend you? What happened?

Or am I misuderstanding this, and Haggerty only provides your comp coverage?

How do you guys cover the "liability risk?"

Or, is this just somehow a non issue?

Bo

It is only a non issue if you have no other assets to lose.

Liability coverage is included. They default to state minimums which is almost nothing. But you can up it more if you want to. Have no idea how they are about paying out though.

So how do you guys do it?

I have everything with State Farm. Car insurance to 100/200k, and umbrella from there to 4mm. So, no bling spots, no gaps in coverage.

I was thinking about switching 2-3 cars to Haggerty/Grundy, as they are garage queens and never really driven. I would love the agreed value coverage.

I also have 2 boys, that are 3 years away from getting driver's licenses.

How does that work with collector car insurance???

Can they drive the cars? What if they drive without permission (teens have been known to do that! I saw Ferris Beuhlers day off!)

Is the collector car insurance liabilitry coverage to 100k? If its lower, doesn't make sense to change my other policies, because then the umbrella coverage just costs more.

In the real world, how do you guys do this? Obviously folks with really expensive cars are using these insurers, so there must be a logic to it...

Ok... jut put som einfo into the Haggerty site for a "quote."

Did my 1987 testarossa, 1000 miles or less per year, 1 driver, garaged, no kids, limited use, $70k value, 100/300 coverage...

$1700!!!! What the heck?

My statefarm coverage is the same, I can drive anyhere, and its $600 per year. And for 1/2 the year I do collision only while its stored, and its $50 for those 6 months. So really, I am paying $300 for 6 months, and 50$ for 6 months.

Thats $350 per year...

Explain to me again how collector car insurance works?

Call a hagerty rep. They should be able to do what you need. Liability limits are adjustable, just tell them what you are trying to cover and for how much. Not sure how they will handle your boys and the cars. Talk to them about that also.

My 911 is covered by my same insurance company that insures my other cars and the house.

The 911 has a stated value specialty policy and I can "only" drive it 5,000 miles per year. I can use it to commute if the El Camino is in the shop. I have high coverage for liability and free towing. The 911 is $11 bucks per month. I had to raise the valuation this year because the 911 is going up in price so much. That is a great problem to have, my toy is worth more every month.

The insurance company is American National. They even send me a check at the end of a year if I don't file a claim for three years.

I just contacted my agent at Liberty Mutual, and they won't cover my '73 for stated value. So I'll stick with Hagerty.

State farm won't do stated value either. They do "Actual Value."

Just trying to figure out what they use to calculate that? Plenty of evidence now shows these cars are really expensive .

If they lowball, I suppose one can always ask for them to find a suitable like substitue rather than taking the cash payout?

Agreed to Value policies seem critical to cars that were restored, and the owner spent WAY MORE than the average similar car costs... I would think...

I had 250 liability limit, I think, with them? when I looked into an Umbrella policy (always a good idea with old cars, kids, dog, a house, etc..) they made me bump up my liability with Hagerty because it was too low. I believe it's 500 now.... It cost me a princely extra $5 ;-)

I don't doubt some of you are getting high quotes, but Hagerty has been and still is a heck of a deal for me.

So why is your quote lower?

When applying for the quote, you had to check off how you intend to use the car.

Choice 1, Car shows only
Choice 2, Occasional pleasure use, rare drives to work
Choice 3 regular use
Choice 4, primary driver

I picked #1 and #2, figuring I MAY drive it to the icecream store every once in a while...

Are folks choosing #1? What do you do? Drive around the block and go home?

Honestly, I don't know... Could be because I have 4 cars with them, been with them for over 10 years with at least one car... But I did have a substantial claim once (not at fault but still $8000) so it's not like they "looooove" me either ;-)

I don't recall the questionnaire - but I did get them to tell me in writing that I could drive the car to work occasionally to show it off... So I guess I'm like you at #2 - I don;t do car shows... I pay the same amount for 4x classic cars per year (one of which with a decently high agreed value) as I do for 6 months of 2x modern cars....

But if they're not working out for you, try Grundy, American collector, etc... Odd.
