laptop computer issue- help please

Toshiba laptop about 6 - 7 years old running Windows 7 and Google Chrome. Yesterday out of the blue Windows pushed some updates and now the computer won't turn off without hitting the power button. And when turning it on I get the system restore error which when used the computer powers up. I have run Security essentials, Spybot and a Malware program they are finding nothing. Do I have a hard drive going bad ? I have an external hard drive tucked away some where I suppose I better find it and back up my files. Any suggestions on what to try ?

Sounds more liked a corrupted update.

Back it up and do a system restore.

I just did that a few minutes ago I restored it to three days ago. I got an error stating one file couldn't be accessed but it seems to be running much better. Hopefully that's all it was but I'm going to run backup just in case.

Don't overwrite your last known good backup.

That said, I'm wondering why MS hasn't gotten perfect at updating. I've got a system at work that started with Debian 5 and is now running 7, just by pointing to the "stable" repositories and doing updates on a regular basis. No change in configurations, no change in user data. Imagine being able to start at Win2k and upgrade to XP and then 7 with no issues....
