I posted that a a while back in the random pics thread. I really suspect it is a funny fake. It is well done but I will be really surprised if that is a real ad from "back in the day."
It is a perfect ad for today. It gets it posted to web sites and it is free advertising. I was too lazy to google it as well.

As far as products go, PB Blaster and Kroil are much better. I actually rusted hundreds of bolts and nuts and tested the releasing ability of these products along with WD-40 and a few others. Each product was sprayed for a specific instance, left to penetrate for X minutes and then a torque wrench was used to establish the ft-kb required to break the rusted nut from the bolt. 50 nut/bolts were used per sample of penetrating release agent. While the results were / still are a matter of corporate research and development, I will say that the WD-40 required 35% more force to break nut then the PB Blaster (which performed the best of commercially available product). Actually the PB Blaster was the best.

And PB blaster will eat a styrofoam coffee cup. As if that's a selling feature.

WD-40 is a moisture displacer, not a lubricant.
