You do not need a 4x4 for winter. You do need four snow tires.

My diesel Jetta (2001) and my V70 Volvo (1999) are fine in winter.

AWD, great gas mileage - bought it in April and am 100% happy w/ it.

Venza awd with blizzaks.
Car is new and really doesn't have a personality. Maybe not a bad thing for a daily driver?
It does make good power when you jump on it.
Haven't owned it long enough to comment on reliability but it was,in my opinion, a lot of car for the price point.
It does have good room inside and should be a good choice for our weekend runs to the mountains.

In Calgary.
Chevy equinox 2013 - AWD (4 cyl) and get 700 kms on a tank!
Jeep TJ -97 4 cyl - 400 kms on a tank :-(

Scuba Steve 11-21-2014 07:39 AM

It depends on whichever I feel like and it's a tough call between these impressive choices.

- 1992 Volvo 960
- 2000 Celica GT-S
- 1987 Mercedes 560SL

Not exactly great on gas but comfy and just about half the cost of the Macam for the same bell & whistle.

Safe to assume you obliged?

My DD is a 2014 Fors escape. Have about 3k miles on it and love it!

2004 Volvo S60R

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416629947.jpg

2.5L turbocharged 5 Cyl., 300 HP, AWD, 6 spd. manual. Fast as hell, handles well, and with winter tires, it's a blast in the snow. Plus it's tight, quiet, comfortable, and ideal for long distance road trips. Apparently invisible to LEO's.

Dave:

I've been thinking about upgrading from my beat up old Saab winter beaters. S60R AWDs are in my sights. What are the potential pitfalls? My 94 Saab delivers 30mpg and the 96 Silverado 4x4 18 mpg highway. How's the S60R?

9 months a year, it's my 85 white Porsche 944, when it's wet or Winter, I drive a spare 97 Saturn SL2, and when it's snowey or slippery, I drive my F-250 4x4 diesel truck.

Most days I DD a 2012 Hyundai Genesis. It's big, comfortable, has lots of buttons to push, the best stereo I have ever had in a car and rear wheel drive pushed by 330hp... Combined I avg 23MPG on 87 octane. If snow ever comes into play here on my morning commute, we all have bigger issues.

Right now, I am part time DDing this '03 GTI VR6. I posted a thread back in May about this car. I bought it dismantled after being hydrolocked by the previous owner. It is destined for my wife's godson next year. It is a hoot to drive, maintains most of its original 200 or so hp, 6 on the floor and will hold an unbelievable amount of stuff, most recently a load of firewood. The less common VR6 engine gets 16mpg combined on high-test, although part of that may be the driver :D

...and unlike most Mk4 Jetta/Golf/GTIs today, this one is bone stock and devoid of Corvette rims, bagged suspension, and stickers that say "illest", "dapper" and "Farfrompuken".
