Show and tell
Remember that special day in school where you got to brag about what you have?
Does anyone else get the feeling that some of our threads are nothing more than more expensive versions of the same thing?

I guess, but there seems to be a lot of common interests. I like seeing cool stuff and learning about cool stuff. It's even nice to learn more about your own cool stuff from a member with more knowledge about your cool stuff.

There's a big difference between sharing and bragging. We have lots of sharing, but a few that like to brag as well (*cough wife pictures*). Sorry, something in my throat. Sharing is fun, bragging is just sad.

This the second post in a couple months making the same inference. The last one critically compared the show-and-tell threads with those long holiday letters about the activities of families.
This is a Porsche forum first, and many Porsche enthusiasts share other hobbies like guns (although lever-guns rule!), dogs, and surfing. I love seeing fellow pelicans share their new purchases, vacations, cars, etc. Rather than get insecure about the things I don't have or can't afford, I like to live vicariously through those that do. Getting irritated by some guy showing off a cool new gun, car, or vacation on the Pelican Off Topic Forum is like complaining about barking at a dog show.

Interesting. I don't remember show and tell like that at all. Wasn't it supposed to be educational? Like some kid brings a pet box turtle and the entire class learns about it?
I can't remember what I brought. Hmmm. Maybe my diamond encrusted Rolex.

In 1966 when I was in grade school the teacher asked the class to participate in Show and Tell. My dad was a member of the Air Force Presentations Team. They had several officers that showed films of the NASA launches and discussed the Apollo program. One of the lines from his speech "Someday in the near future you will sit in your living room and watch live color video from a handheld video camera of men walking on the moon." Most adults thought that was impossible. Getting to the moon was hard and all video cameras were in TV studios and weighed hundreds of pounds and had to set on heavy tripods with wheels. So to answer the first question I brought my dad and his friends and the entire school watched. The answer to the second question. NO.

A neat thing about the show and tell threads is you make connections with other members. Might be 'oh look johnny likes to road bike' or 'I can't believe that arsehole likes to hunt....guess I should give him a second chance'

So, first grade, around 1982 or so..
The guy around the corner is an A-10 pilot. I'm friends with his son. The dad brings both of us of couple of dummy rounds for the gun at the front of the plane. There's a hole through the primer and you can see there's nothing inside. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I decide to bring it to show and tell. The teacher freaks, thinks it's some sort of bomb. Principal comes to the classroom, grabs me (and the round) explains to the whole class that "these sorts of things killed my husbands friends in Vietnam". They call my parents. My dad shows up and starts laughing his a** off. Tells the principal to look inside the round. Takes a while to convince her it's not a bomb and not to call the police. I can only imagine what would happen nowadays...

That's a pretty respectable moustache for a first grader!

One of the reasons I moved to Portland. Only this city could handle the sheer awesomeness of my beard.

Another great example of stupidity at the helm of our education system. Don't let someone else throw away your pencil either
