Neuro-muscular Injury? Docs?

This past May, I was riding some high speed enduro course on my KTM dirtbike. At one point, I got too much throttle while going over a tabletop like jump, and the bike came out from under me. I landed SUPER hard at the bottom of the jump, apparently directly on my backside, and tumbled several times before coming to a stop.

I was dazed, but conscious. Wind knocked out of me and in some significant lower back pain. After a few minutes I was able to get up and walk around. Rode home with my buddy in pain, but otherwise ok.

Very sore for about a week, but then getting back to close to normal. Except...I still have a sore tailbone, and the top of my glutes are still tender. Most worrisome, though, is there is an area about 4x4" on each side of my upper glutes that is still numb. I can walk, run, everything fine, but my tailbone still feels bruised and I have that numbness. When I sit down, I feel like there is something stuffed into the back of my pants that I am sitting on, like a small pillow or something. It is the muscle damage and the numbness that I am feeling.

Should I be concerned? It's been 6 months and it is still there. What kind of doc should I see, or should I just give it more time?

Thanks,

JA

A bruised tailbone, coccydynia, is notoriously painful and slow to heal. But if you've got persistent numbness, that could be indicative of some nerve irritation or damage. Any other pains running down the legs? Problems with bowel or bladder habits?

If you want to see someone, your options are either an ortho or neurosurgical spine guy, or a sports medicine guy (often their training will be in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation--they're not surgeons).

Hope you get relief from your symptoms.

Thanks Noah930

No other real pain or symptoms. I had a laminectomy 20 years ago, so I know what herniated disc feels like. No problems with bowels or bladder. And while the numbness is annoying, it is not really causing any other problems. I just wonder why that isn't getting better, and if that could somehow later turn into a bigger, more impactful problem later.

Could it just be "local" nerve damage? Is it possible for a smallish, localized area like that to stay numb forever and not cause other problems? Honesty, I think I just bruised or cracked my tailbone and SEVERELY literally "smashed" the muscle and nerves in that area. It was solid black and blue for a couple weeks.

See your primary care doc, and get a LS spine/coccyx xray, which will lead to an MRI.

Numbness after a back injury is NEVER normal.

You need to find out what it is, so it doesn't get worse.

Legal disclaimer: This is not medical advice/I am not acting as your physician/and this doesn't establish a patient/doctor relationship... Go see your doc

Coccydynia is not fun. If that's what it is, stay away from the "donut" cushions. Get one of these instead: Amazon.com: Coccyx Cushion - Extra Soft: Health & Personal Care

In fact, you'll need several - one for the car, one for every office chair, etc.

That's if you have coccydynia. You absolutely need to get checked out.
