Ex-Napster COO killed on Mulholland, struck by cop while bicycling

Wonder what they are going to do about Mulholland, seems like this is a weekly occurrence, either a bike, motorcycle, pedestrian or vehicle gets in an accident.

Are dash cams on the whole time a car is on, or only when activated by the officer? Sad either way.

I might have to recheck your link after I get home from work.. I need to join the Great @ss debate that was linked when I viewed that page.

Disturbing. Probably would think twice before riding a road full of and known for hooligans. Worse yet, the victim riding in the bike lane is killed by a cop. Sad.

Wow, he was in the bike lane and a cop killed him. That cop should be charged with manslaughter like any other driver in that situation.

A similar accident happened in my region recently. A lot of talk in the news about how distracted LEO's are with all the laptops, phones, CB radio, etc they have in their cars.

Exactly... I think its funny that so many states are banning texting and driving, while putting laptops in all patrol cars. I see plenty of them open going down the road too...

chilling photo. as a long time cyclist and racer, I am more and more worried about training on back roads as the danger keeps creeping up...cell phones and texting are the big culprits.

But then, you see all of the special exemptions for police. In gun control states (lets not PARF this) and during the fed AWB, there were exemptions and exceptions for police. There is nationwide shall-issue CC for retired officers. The exceptions/exemptions from "driving distracted" usually because "we have high level training". Great... does that mean that someone with a high end SCCA drivers permit, a professional race car driver, etc. has no speed limit?

I heard somewhere that the dashcam turns on with the overheads. I bet MMARSH knows for sure.

Nice - this is what happens when there's no oversight.

As a matter of fact I do. LASD doesn't have dash cams in the cars....

Pretty funny how quick someone said the deputy should be charged with manslaughter. Funny how quick people are to jump to conclusions. Unfortunate situation regardless, but I haven't read anything that points to whose to blame.

That being said, Department policy is that your not supposed to use the MDT/MDC while driving.

OK, just read that rider was in the bike lane, That's not good.

For the life of me I cannot understand why there would even be a bike lane on a road like that. I know it's only a small sampling, from selected locations, but that youtube guy - rmickymouse something or another - has endless video of top drawer ass-hattery on Mulholland. More cyclist "well, we have the right to be here...", regardless of any sort of common sense?

My condolences to all involved. Karma? Maybe it finally caught up with a man who was single-handedly (and quite unapologetically) responsible for billions upon billions of dollars worth of pirated music, depriving its true owners of deserved income?

As far as the officer, I would sure hate to be in his shoes, or in those of his family. Even if he were not a cop, it sounds like the early cries for his head are justified. In the bike lane? Not engaged in any sort of a response to an emergency? No excuse.

Now add to all of that the fact that he is a cop. Maybe folks wouldn't be so quick to hold that against him, if cops were not so quick to hold themselves above us. It will be interesting to see what sort of "higher standard" this officer will be held to - my bet is he won't. My bet is that the worst he will see is a suspension, if even that.
