I don't get the Christmas spirit until....

What does it for you? For me, besides the obvious things like family and such, watching the Christmas story movie (Red Rider rifle) gets me in a good mood. The Chinese restaurant scene is great. Also the song Snoopy and the Red Baron gets me going.

A little touch of snow on Christmas eve helps too. I'm not religious, but midnite mass was also very Christmassy. In any case whatever it is for you I hope you find it and enjoy your holidays as best you can. Happy Holidays to you all!

I'm still looking for it, I'll let you know when I figure it out.

Yesterday's shopping trips didn't help.

I don't do Christmas, that's my wife and kid's problems. We are not religious, so no church for us. Now, don't get near the edges of my lawn

When all I seem to see, and hear is what great deals I can get in the Christmas sales adds or commercials on TV. They don't give a damn about the real reason for the season and only care about their bottom lines.

Usually, if something does get me into the mood of holiday spirit, it's not about getting or giving gifts, or waiting outdoors for hours and days to be at the front of the line, or even listening to non-stop Christmas music.

I used to love Christmas. Now I hate it. It used to be fun. Now its all about commercial materialism.

This.

I do it for the kids but honestly I can't stand it anymore. Gigantic pain in the ass / ratrace / runaround. Sorry to be grinch or Scrooge-like but when I see the Xmas junk getting full-court-pressed by retailers before Halloween now it just makes my skin crawl.

Also not religiously affiliated. The whole notion of the Christmas story is rather silly but a fun one I suppose. Good fiction - kinda like the whole Santa Claus thing.

Seeing Christmas through the eyes of kids is fun. Went shopping yesterday and really enjoyed watching the little ones get excited. I also like to give and for me doing that puts this season in perspective.

I trimmed the tree at my sister's last night. Or more like I watched my son and niece do the decorating. Despite their lack of height (ages 9 & 2), they did a great job of even coverage all over the tree.

I have a special Christmas album that I play once a year at this time. The ONLY Christmas music I play.

Renaissance-era songs and rounds. Non-traditional carols. Beautiful music my mom used to play while she got the house ready and decorated, and I always insisted she play it over and over again while I read and reread the stories of the songs on the album cover till it was dog eared and shredded...

For the 30 or 40 minutes it plays, I can return to the Christmas of my past, but it only works once per year, so I have to be careful to wait til the mood is right.

Once in a while I see some kid delight in the joy that used to be Christmas for me and I'm nostalgic for a fleeting moment, but otherwise it's just kind of a great big pain in the ass.

I just finished a photo book history of my family to present to my 23 year old daughter this Christmas. We decided as a family that this year is about one deep meaning gift for everyone...homemade if possible. I will fly my daughter and boyfriend here for Christmas as they are young and broke...We will take a short 2.5 hour trip north to visit my father and sister while they are here. Tree is up, lights are on, I am looking forward to the season this year.

Christmas is why I like Thanksgiving so much. It's just good food, family, football , and play some cards for a relaxing day at home.

I think you guys are missing the point... its a nice time of the year to be in a thankful mood and do special things for your family. Not that you can't do this during the rest of the year, but with the tree, decorations, meals, etc. it just makes things a bit more special. If you can just surrender and get in the mood, its not so bad Plus, you get to buy yourself something awesome without the wife's permission. I bought a Costco toolbox.

Watching Jim Carey's version of The Grinch and being able to slow off full boil and spend some real quality time with the family.

It's all about the kids. Watching them enjoy decorating the tree, lights on the house, Christmas movies, decorating cookies, etc. Obviously they are excited about gifts, but we try to keep them focused on the real meaning as well. It's a huge PITA but all worth it.

My favorite tradition, one that has continued from when I was growing up, is watching National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Classic movie.
