WTF??? Why not use them! Let them patina on their own over time? Is there some embarrassment with a new blade?

porsche4life 03-15-2015 12:28 AM

That's my thought Dave. I just use them when I need them and if they get patina that's fine...

The BK5 seems a reasonable price under $65 :
KA-BAR BK5 Becker Magnum Camp Knife 8" Blade, Nylon Sheath - KnifeCenter - 2-0005-2

You guys must hunt, fish and camp for more then me. I would use a knife like that maybe 5 times a year. Cool to have though...

Just a leather belt with green compound. I stand on one end, stretch it tight and strop it. I could perform surgery with all my knives. This one in particular is profoundly sharp. A paper thin feather of leather flew out once when I pulled the blade. Knife had skimmed the inside of the sheath and cut a sheet of leather so thin I could see thru it. I love the thing. It was hard to cut that first lemon knowing it was gonna destroy that "new knife smell"

no. i've been told a certain level of patina offers "some" limited protection against rust. jury is still out with my experience, but most of my carbon blades i get them started at home. i dont force a patina, i just use it..at home. at home it is more than likely my kitchen. that's all.

better to get a rust spot at home than 50 miles in the back hills of the Sierras. like i said, jury is still out.

honestly, it was the opposite (new blade-look embarrassment). cutting into the first acidic lemon, i would be lying if i said i didnt grimace a little bit.

I am the same way. Camping to me is a hotel with slow wi-fi. :p

I do appreciate knives but I just can't think of any reason I need one of those camping knives.

My grandfather worked at Armor and company from the time he was 17 until they closed the plant. He cut up a lot of meat in his days. His favorite knife was a Green River works knife and I know it is older than I am. He kept it crazy sharp. He gave it to me and I could tell it was a cherished knife. I still use it when we have veggies to cut up at home. I only sharpen it every few years and right now it is dull enough he would be mad. It is dangerous having a large super sharp butcher knife in a knife drawer that will cut you if you touch the blade at all.

This is what my grandfather's knife looks like.

Glen,

blunt knives are more dangerous than sharp ones. (more true in the camping world than in the veggie cutting world, but still..)
If you keep your knife sharp enough to cut yourself when touching it, you should find a better place to keep it besides in a kitchen drawer. Or make a simple sheath for it. :)

VARIERA Knife tray - IKEA

Glen, one of those will store your knife pointy side down! We bought one, but its too long for our drawers, going to have to make it a bit shorter!

GH85Carrera 03-16-2015 10:38 AM

That knife is not dull or blunt, just not crazy razor sharp like my grandpa kept it.

And getting anything different for knife storage would involve changing the kitchen layout and Mrs. Carrera does not make those changes easily. It ain't worth the effort. Heck, we almost never use the kitchen except the microwave and the fridge.
