120+ car pile-up in Michigan today.

Video: http://youtu.be/gDb_MENTSE0
A bit unnerving to watch. 1 death 29 injured.

For the rest of the year I usually feel better after the first few snow storms have happened.
All the reckless ones have gone off the road, the others see what happened, and the whole are more cautious (and respectful) of others throughout the rest of the season.

That is crazy to Watch but, yes, predictable. We have our fair share of that too but this is really a big one.

The filming was just as bad as the accident.
If people can't figure out how to hold a phone when filming, how the heck does anyone expect them to learn how to drive?

this doesn't usually happen today either. That it happens at all attests to the power of heard mentality in humans.

I live in the Mtns and drive in snow all winter.....A huge percentage on the freeway don't slow don't slow for reduced visibility or slick conditions; especially those from the urban areas driving SUV's.

So, let's just stand around and record this. Let's NOT run down the median to try to warn oncoming traffic? Let's NOT render aid. Let's NOT put out our road flares. Oh, who carries flares anymore?

We have a new leader for ignorant post of the year! We're only 10 days in so you have plenty of time to say something even more stupid. I'm sure you will.

Being from Louisiana, obviously we don't have these sort of accidents. So I have to ask, other than speed, what other factors cause this sort of thing to happen? Visibility, etc....?The closest thing we have is huge rain storms, but common logic says to slow down. 160 cars, certainly there has to be a few that have some common sense??

My dad and I were returning from deer hunting in northern Michigan in November, strong bands of snow coming down along the way, 18 inches of snow on the ground. All sorts of MORONS driving way too fast, some of the them with heavily laden trailers on the back. We would get passed, then 10 minutes later come upon the same idiot in the ditch. We slowed down to 45mph when the visibility was poor, 50-60 when we could see. We came through just fine.

I will never understand peoples lack of care when it comes to driving in snow. I grew up in Michigan, and yes, there is such as a thing as knowing how to 'drive in snow'. But that doesn't mean you can defy the laws of physics.

In summary, people are stupid.

You are vastly overestimating the commonness of this logic.

Poor visibility and black ice often cause this. When black ice occurs the road just looks wet and you don't know you have no traction until you start sliding. Road salt melts snow and ice, but it refreezes in place when the temps drops too fast for the water to evaporate or blow off before it gets down to the temp at which salt will no longer keep it liquid. It was probably caused by rapidly changing road conditions and people going too fast in the first place.

You do understand that there are facebook accounts that MUST be fed, right? How better declare one's importance to the rest of the world than to post this in the hopes that it goes VIRAL!!!

In the videographer's defense, I think he did well to not become caught up in the carnage () by rushing into the median and only hope he didn't cause a pile up by stopping to film.

193 cars involved

I looked again at the video and find no fault with the actions of the person doing the recording. I don't think he knew how bad this would get until after about the 3rd vehicle crashed after he started filming. Then it was apparent things were escalating - thus he sprung into action. You can tell by his narrative he is very concerned with the crashing....and I give him credit for not spouting cuss words as is usually the case in situations like this.

As to the driving habits leading to this...is anyone really surprised? When is the last time you drove anywhere when some other driver wasn't driving like a dumbazz?

SLOW DOWN in weather!

I have a couple million behind me, would you like to enlighten ME with your shinning so bright light?
The stuff i carried was all O.S. ( Big ,Fat, Wide, High, open and exposed, and Over axle.
However, i am sure you have the insight on it all to come on board with a flame right?
How many miles do you have and what experience do you draw from?
Please enlighten me !
Or do you just like to sound arrogant?
Or perhaps, are the hinges in your jaw just hooked up to the flapper valve orifice at the other end?

At least there was no fire. I don't know how many killed or injured but apparently one Canadian trucker was killed. Yes as the above says driving too fast for the conditions.

I do in the kit I carry in the cars, little fire extinguisher, wood dowel and a piece of rope(tourniquet) one of those cheesy escape tools with the thing to cut the seatbelt and the window breaker deal, which works on a side window easily, tried it out at a junkyard once. I also carry swim trunks and a towel, because you never know when you might need to go swimming, and a man needs to know where his towel is.

Only 141 shopping days left until Towel Day

See post 12 for a plausible explanation for what caused the accident. 120 vehicles did NOT pile into each other because of immigrant truckers lacking CB radios.
