Someone hit my car in the parking lot at work today

Sucks. 2014 Subaru. They're going to check the security camera tape. A few questions -- if they are not able to find the culprit, how would this be handed by the insurance company - Comprehensive, or Uninsured Motorist Property Damage? I asked my insurance co tonight, and they said that would be determined when I file a claim. And if I were to file a claim, would it raise my rates (USAA)? And how much $ would you estimate? I'm going to get an estimate over the weekend, to determine if I should file a claim, or pay for it myself depending on how much it is after my deductible. And then part of me is debating trying to fix it myself w/ touchup paint, but the car is less than a year old and I'm anal about my cars, so it would bug me every time I looked at it....

I think that could be cleaned up for under $1K out of pocket. Depending on your deductible you might want to leave your insurance out of it.

Sucks Dave. That has happened multiple times to me as well.

I don't know if thats a Forester, but ebay has a genuine Subaru 2014-2015 Forester bumper cover for 55 bucks plus 14 shipping.

2014 2015 Genuine Subaru Forester Rear Bumper Cover E771SSG300 | eBay

Might be worth checking out. Due diligence is advised, do some part number cross checking, etc...

A comprehensive claim doesn't affect your rates, but a collision claim would, so it would be important to know up-front. Repairing it properly requires removing the bumper to paint it, which increases the cost dramatically. Hopefully, your insurance would pay for that (or better yet, a new bumper cover, if they come painted). Be nice if you could identify the culprit. Hard to imagine they didn't know they hit your car...

I had a kid tag my Edge similarly, it's tough to tell but you'd be surprised how much of that is just crap rubbed onto the paint. I hit mine with a clay bar, Meguires rubbing compound and a lot of it cleaned up. The scratch and rubbed off paint I had a good body guy take care of as some side work for $50 and a case of beer.

I'll give you his name if you want, but he's down in Green Township, might be a bit far. Let me know.

Hit and run on my Mother's ride was covered w/o a deductible and under uninsured driver coverage. Caveat, Geico and in CA. YMMV

Deductibles don't apply to hit and runs and it should not count as a claim against your record or raise your rates. Call your agent to confirm but you're probably wasting money if you don't make a claim.

Sucks. I had somehing similar happen to my car a few years ago - some asshat plowed right into the driver's side door at the train station garage while I was at work - smashed the door all to hell and left a trail if broken glass, mirror and taillight lens all over the place. Real fun to come back to at the end of a long workday... I took a bunch of photos and submitted a claim which was promptly denied. Turned into an absolute horror show. It was SO obvious what had happened but ended up being a drawn-out PITA process. Did eventually get the car fixed to my satisfaction (mostly). Garage was totally unhelpful with camera footage so if you have it and they're working with you, consider yourself lucky. Hope the popo might actually be able to nail the person who did it too. Best of luck. Home your ins. co. doesn't try to screw you too badly.

Too bad you're not in PDX. I'd have you bring it by my shop and fix it (properly, and you'd never know it happened) in a few hours. I wouldn't charge you.

FWIW: I got hit like this a couple of years ago. There was some paint of the car that hit me on my bumper. It was in a downtown parking lot. Hit and run... I was pi$$$ed!.
"How do I find the culprit" I asked? It's a freakin' CITY for cryin' out loud- so then I thought about it ( I was REALLY mad so I did A LOT of thinking). It was a commuter lot- The only people there would be- well - commuters- so they would be back. "Where would I park my car if I did such a thing?" I asked.... "Probably on the other side of the parking lot- as far away as I could from the accident." I answered, and yes, I talk to myself and am weird like that.

The next day I walked to right where I would park my car had I been the culprit and guess what I found... A car with my car's paint all over it. I measured the bumpers height- close, but not exact match. I was pretty sure, but not certain.. so now what?, do I confront them only to find out they are a 7 foot tall weightlifter? Hell no.

I wrote a simple little note and left it on their windshield. It read: " I saw you hit that car yesterday.. I am giving you 24 hours to give them your info or I will for you and testify against you in court." I did not specify what car they hit.

When I came back later that day, my car had a note in it's windshield with her contact info, insurance info, and an apology.

Might not work in your situation, but something to think about.. good luck.
Ron

There are 10 assigned spaces in the condo parking lot at our rental, and another area for visitors. Pretty annoying knowing it was probably one of our 9 neighbors that didn't come forward.
Police looked at all the other cars but inconclusive.
Did you see what MRM said above?

Seems like yours qualifies as a hit and run.

Shouldn't matter that the police couldn't pin it down to a particular vehicle. It might have been a random visitor.

Either way, the driver ran, right?

this is why i am scared to drive the 930.

i would leave til they hit the other side. then do a 2 for one repair.

i did that on the wife's mercedes. she ran into the back of someone. not a lot of damage but needed a new hood and fender. i kept telling people i was waiting for her to wreck it again so i could get a 2 for 1 deal. sure enough. my daughter hit a deer in it and finished it off so it was not driveable.

point is. bumpers take a beating. i would not jump on fixing it. like someone else said, you might bypass insurance. a lot of them will count it AGAINST you. then they raise your rate to get their money back. insurance is nothing more than a legalized (mandatory) form of a loan shark.

I drove my 914 for over 20 years. In those years all four fenders were smashed while the car was parked in a safe and legal parking spot. Four different parts of town, some at night some in the evening. I never saw as much as a note on the windshield saying everyone watching thinks I am leaving my info but screw you. The cheapest repair was $450 and that is in 1980s dollars. I never could figure out how someone could even hit me the way they did. I always parked at the far end of a lot or at least with a curb on one side.

After sleeping on it, I'm leaning toward this, and/or calling Icemaster's body guy, if they don't find the perp. It's almost all linear scratches down to the plastic, on the edges, no gouges or damage to the plastic, so I may try the layers-of-touch-up-paint-blend-with-fine-sandpaper method myself.

Yes, it's a total pisser than some jackass hit my new car and didn't leave a note - especially since they probably work at the same company as I do. But at the end of the day it's my daily driver, it's not terrible damage, and it's not the 911. Plus, the thought of repainting the factory painted bumper when 99% of the rest of the bumper is perfect is something to consider. Definitely leaning toward not filing a claim and dealing with the potential hassles.

A good body shop can clean that up in short order. Just feather out the scratches, a little filler and a dusting of primer. Blend color just over the damaged spot and clear the whole bumper. If you're as picky as you say, you won't be happy with touch up.
