My grandson had no idea why his teacher thought it was such a big deal
So last week I was talking to my 8 yo grandson when I picked him up from school. He tells me, "We changed our spots today." What does that mean? Moved their seats in the classroom. He is now sitting next to a different kid. He is pretty gregarious, so before too long, he is talking to the kid and they getting to be friends.
After class, his teacher tells him she needs to speak to him, he is thinking he is in trouble for something. She wants to know how he did it. How he did what? Get the other kid to talk to him. Apparently, in the 3.5 years this kid has been going to the school, he has not said 3 words, he just does not talk, and had only been friendly with one other kid, who was not in his class this year. How did you get him to talk to you? Everybody talks to me, I don't understand. But that kid does not talk to anybody, what did you do? I just talked to him. This is not the first time he has demonstrated sensitivity beyond his years. With some of the crap you see and hear, might make you think there is no hope. Things like this make me realize there is.

Good on your grandson!
In her last year of teaching, my wife had a student who was "selectively mute". He could (and did talk at home) but had never uttered a word at school. A very dedicated teachers aid finally made a breakthrough after several months. You never know what's going on inside their heads. Glad your GS could help bring this kid out of his shell. Best Les

Agree, your grandson is a perceptive and sensitive boy. No doubt, the non-speaking boy had observed your grandson in class and his interaction/behavior with others. Something about your grandson's entire demeanor gave that boy the sense of security he needed to open verbal communication with him. That is something that can't be faked and is a result of your grandson's innate personality and upbringing. Congratulations to your whole family.

Your GS sounds like a great kid.
How did you get him to talk to you? Everybody talks to me, I don't understand. But that kid does not talk to anybody, what did you do? I just talked to him. I love how kids just tell it like it is.

Excellent story!
He may not understand it but I bet that the adults around the nonspeaking kid do.

There are many types of intelligence; verbak being only one of them.
That woud be verbal. I don't think verbak is an emglish word. |

I did not have to do that. He said the other kid did not have enough friends, so he would be his friend. A few years ago he said there was a new kid that was sitting alone at lunch and looked sad so he went and sat with him.

Says a lot about prejudging people. When you don't expect the kid to talk that what you get.
