Because bandwagon.

I feel rich, and I want to collect the thing that other cool collectors are collecting. Ferraris, muscle cars, Porsches...

Then there's the fact that all these kids had a poster on the wall, and now they have enough money to afford it...

No, this cheap money thing is really a non-starter. Actually listening to why people buy stuff might give you a clue as to why people buy stuff. Making schitt up as far as motivations go is sorta dumb.

Absolute stupid money for what it is. (even assuming it's a real Speedster)
But I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually pays that for it considering a clean RS will now well over $1,000,000.
(12 years ago I could have bought a 73 RS Touring for $300,000 locally)

Were will this end?

What are you going to get for that money? Speedsters are hot. 89 ' s obviously are most sought after but these will bring the money too in this condition. I do have reservations about the tiptronic.

I'm not in the market but have seen nice 430s and Californias for that price range. Nonetheless the speedster is cool and rare.

Rare car if it's real.

Less than 1,000 made and a few more than 400 for the US market.

But that ragtop just looks wrong.

Why no pics with the top down?

Very hard to compare a 430 or California to a speedster of any vintage. The F cars you cite are avail in large numbers and remain on a sharp depreciation path. Oh yes, the f's of those versions are also nearly all "automatics" to boot!

The speedster is rare and on a path up !

Absolutely. I'll take a 355, even with it's quirks and high parts prices, over a 964 Speedster (and I like Speedsters). I think some people have lost a bit of common sense.

aschen 02-01-2015 12:23 PM

I have no idea why the 964 speedster falls into the ultra desirable category. It is rare but I'm not really sure what's desirable about it

Shaun @ Tru6 02-01-2015 05:26 PM

Seam welded unibody, cool windshield, no vent windows.

Run of the mills 964s were ugly duckling $13K to $20K cars in general just 2-3 years ago. They've doubled in price today and you never see them for sale. I don't anyway doing 3-4 500 miles CL searches each week. The Speedster being a low production, iconic 911 based (loosely) on the 356 original, always commands big prices.

I agree. Just looks like a stripped down, chopped top 964, unless I am missing something more special about it. Stating the obvious here, rare production seems to be what is driving the price.

sc_rufctr 02-01-2015 06:33 PM

Anything with a Porsche badge made in small numbers is only going one way in value right now.

About 5 or 6 years ago you could pick up an average but clean 924 for about $6k (Australia). The same car is now closer to $10k .... FOR A 924!
I'm not sure who would actually pay that but that's what the sellers are asking.

And you'd still have enough money left over for a Testarossa and a 911sc!

creaturecat 02-02-2015 07:53 AM

Ugly, those Speedsters.
I just don't get it.
Gimme a coupe, preferably an RS ......

creaturecat 02-02-2015 07:58 AM

BTW
That is not even close to being the highest price paid for a 964.

Jim Richards 02-02-2015 08:03 AM

No kidding?

Value has absolutely NOTHING to do with it.
It's all about SPECULATION.

They pay stupid money for cars because they know someone else will pay more.
Think pyramid scheme.

Turbo 3.6's are in the $300K range.

See post #2
The greater fool theory states that the price of an object is determined not by its intrinsic value, but rather by irrational beliefs and expectations of market participants. A price can be justified by a rational buyer under the belief that another party is willing to pay an even higher price. Or one may rationally have the expectation that the item can be resold to a "greater fool" later.
