I agree Paul - most cops do a good job and are careful with their authority.

As in many a situation - it's the bad ones (and there are many, no doubt) that give the entire force a bad rap. You'd think the good cops would realize this and do more to resolve this.

So yeah...I think what chaps most of us is the reluctance for those good cops to weed out the bad ones. There's a code they follow not to rat on each other. That's my biggest issue aside from individual instances like this one.

I support law enforcement in general, but won't hesitate to call them out individually where applicable. Like this one - that lady cop is a complete dumbass and a disgrace to the force.

If we just look at their feet and say "Yessuh Massa" when the bad ones misbehave it will soon be 90/10 the other way. We HAVE to push back against police misconduct. It's our civic duty.

I am the most obsequious milque-toast on the planet when the cops pull me over (it serves me well) - save one time. Long long day and had to pick my kids up at the airport at 11:00PM. 12:30AM, turning into the "hood", got pulled over for going too fast on a 35mph rural road. Got snippy "Wha'd I do?" sort of snippy.

"Get out of the car" is what I heard. Cop says back by the trunk to me "I don't want to embarrass you in front of you kids. However, I will ***** in your nest because you don't know what a long day is" That's when I came to my senses and started saying "Yes Sir.

I saw the one with the Seattle cop pepper spraying the guy who was just walking past. Where do they find these people who are so unsuited for the job? Being a police officer in a large American city is a pretty good job, great pay and benefits, etc. Almost all of the cops I see in L.A. seem pretty happy and sane, like they enjoy their jobs. WTF is with Seattle?

The real problem is the entire police mentality of escalating situations instead of de-escalating them and then the complete lack of real punishment when they get out of line. I've been in one or two situations where I knew the cop wanted to escalate things and I had to be the one to de-escalate. Such cops should be in another line of work. Fortunately, I recognized the situation and was the cooler head. But anything other than a cooler head could have ended up in a real bad situation for something very minor because the cop "was having a bad day" or "wanted to go home at the end of his shift" or one of the other excuses we hear. And how many family dog-killing cops have lost their jobs and gone to jail? So this one gets desk duty until the news cycle forgets about her. Then it's right back to the old beat.

What is your responsibilty as a citizen to obey an unlawful order? This woman was power tripping and should have been summarily dismissed from her duties and banned from police work forever. I know it is a tought job, but it is a critical one too with very little room for error. Any cop that behaves in this manner should face some sort of charge under the criminal code.
Policing has gotten waaaay to deep into the us vs them mentality, and arming them up like the gestapo is hardly helping the situation.

I believe that with all the police malfeasance that has occurred the Greater Seattle Metropolitan area over the last decade, this is a systemic problem that is being condoned at a very high level within police management. Either that of the union really has for too much power and they are condoning this behavior.
