I walked in with excellent ASVAB, told them I wanted Advanced Electronics, they tried pushing several different rates at me and I told them "no ticky, no washy". After MEPS they tried pushing me into Sonar and Nuke and I held my ground. Got the rate and the type of duty I wanted. To do that I ended up on delayed entry for ten months until the timing was right for the A School billet to line up with everything I had to pass before that. I also, got that ten months added to my time in grade. I was nearly a year ahead in pay when I entered Boot as an E3.

There were a lot of guys planning to be Advanced ETs that ended up as Radiomen. I wasn't one of em. My only regret was that the recruiter never really attempted to ply me with OCS but, then again I was pretty straight forward with him as to the odds of my reenlisting after my six was up.

My son wanted to see some of the world coming out of HS.....I was surprised at his wanderlust. I suggested he join the AF.......why?, says he. because compared to the rest of the services, the AF goes first cabin with a minimum of BS, says I. When i was in the ARMY we used to fight over who got to go to the AF detachment just for the food. (no KP for them airmen) He went AF as a mechanic, stayed in 7 years and ended up as a flying crew chief on a C-5A.....went all over hell gone...IIRC, the only continent he missed was Antarctica. He then went straight to work for the AF as a civilian working C-17s. He is now an E-7 in the reserves. I done good for once.

Unless that is the only recruiter for miles and miles I would suggest finding another one. When I went in there was no such thing as a "contract" or anything else or course that was in 1965! I took a 100 question test that covered lots of stuff and was used along with a couple of manual dexterity tests to see what you might do? The Air Force and Army wanted me to fly Helos........sort of dangerous back then and the Navy said hey....we have this Nuclear power program, extra money, clean ships, 1 1/2 years of schooling and at that time they were just starting so all the school counted as sea time! I'd say have hime stick it out until he gets what he wants.

Another Navy vet here - The recruiter is giving you a line of BS - big time. He needs to fill his quota and do what looks good on his record - those are his orders. NO WAY someone who signs up as a cook can transfer specialty as he describes. There are many, many stories of this that go like: "Hey, I was supposed to be a... ...that's what the recruiter told me! " followed by "Tough luck, son - you're an adult and that's what you signed up for. Your country needs you to be a [insert menial job you don't want here]. Tough luck and make the best of it." I was supposed to be able to go AD or AM, but I ended up an STG.

My SO was a Marine cop, was promoted up to a commissioned officer. Did 20 then 20 more at Tustin PD. Spiffier uniforms. When I went to the PX in Dago with her, the Marine contingent were Squared away.

When I was enlisted in the AF, we only competed for promotion against others in our career field. An average guy that went into a high tech field just wasn't bright enough to get promoted. Too much competition. A sharp guy who became a cop or cook moved up very fast...as most of his competition were guys who didn't qualify for anything else. The only problem was some were just too bored to stick it out and got into trouble...and it did not prep you for a good follow-on career like a high tech job. It is a good idea to enlist in an area where you are at the top end of the aptitude required, not the bottom.

I have not been involved with any recruiting for many years now. Led pretty much summed it up though. If it isn't in the contract it never happened. I think it may be possible he wants to get in right away, I.E. no delayed entry program or as soon as possible to boot camp. If that is the case a culinary specialist (cook) may be the only opening. My kids joined the Army. Reason? the Navy had too long of an entry delay for the fields they wanted. My youngest son is going to try a green to blue (Army to Navy) conversion when his contract is up.

As far as recruiting quotas go, they don't involve specific rates. The Armed Services Aptitude Battery ASVAB scores will determine what career field he qualifies for, usually cooks are nearer the bottom of the spectrum as far as ASVAB scores go.

You are correct. E-4 to E-6 is a combination of test score, standard evaluations, points for certain awards and points for passing scores but not being advanced on previous exams. The exam for E-7 is annual, whereas the others are biannual. Passing the E-7 gets you into the party, but doesn't mean you get to dance. If you pass the exam, your record goes to a promotion board and they compare how many slots they need to fill in a specific job (rating) and then select those who advance. E-8 and E-9 IIRC are solely decided by selection boards. I'm sure the other Navy ratings on here can correct me if I've erred.

Tell the recruiter that you are wise to his game. If he persists, tell him to leave your child alone. If he doesn't, have an attorney call him. You'll likely never hear from him again. An Army recruiter got onto my daughter after high school. One afternoon he called and my daughter gave me the phone. I told him I was a retiree, and my daughter was not suited for the military. Never heard from him again... Carter

They fill spots based on need and ability. Maybe the evaluation indicates he would be a good cook but not so good of a cop. The world needs ditch diggers too Danny. judge Smails

Retired after 28 years in the Navy - feel free to PM with your questions. As others have said, sounds like a hard sell, but need to see what his ASVAB scores are (cooks are pretty low on the scale, as contrasted with Electronics or Nuclear power). If he wants to be in Security, think about Air Force - their enlisted guys either fix airplanes or guard them...
