Volvo XC60 vs Land Rover Discovery sport

Going next week to test drive each one. I have been reading everything I can find online.

What should I look for?

buy a grand Cherokee for less $ and on your way home pick up an uncomfortable chair, cheap coffee maker and some of those cone shaped water cups. Put all those things in your garage and every few months go sit in the chair for a few hours, spill water on yourself and grimace at the coffee selection.

you end up with a better vehicle and you can still have the dealer service experience without the cost.

We looked at the XC60 and ended up with a Toyota Venza (price).

My father in law has the XC60 and it is a nicer vehicle to drive than the Toyota. His second Volvo (first was a V8 XC90). As the XC90 aged, it started to nickle and dime him until it was no longer reliable but the first ten years it was pretty much bullet proof save for a wheel bearing replacement under warranty. He also clocks a lot of miles on his cars.

My wife has had her 2015 XC60 R-Design for one year this month. She loves it. It's had zero warranty issues. We're very happy with the purchase.

I have had 3 Volvo's and 1 Range Rover. The Volvos have all been great trouble free cars. The Range Rover was great when it worked, which was not very often. Unless they have markedly improved, I would only recommend Land Rover if you don't mind constant maintenance issues.

My wife bought a v60 awd (basically a xc60- but not lifted up an inch or two) this summer. This is the 5 cylinder model, not the new 4. She has 14,000 on it. It has been a good car- except, on it's maiden trip, the cruise control would turn off as if the computer was too accurate and sensing a discrepancy in wheel speed, and disengaging the cruise control.

A 2 hour trip to the volvo dealership, and berettafan's description of the dealership experience later, they downloaded the latest updates, and the car has been okay since, well, except for the low air pressure sensor....

Let's put it this way. I am happy with the car, but owning an xc70, I know what looms in the future for this car.

I would still rather have it than the land rover from a dependability standpoint.
I like the way it handles. I do not like the way it shifts. It is too intrusive in manual mode- but so if my xc70. I am also NOT a fan of all the proximity sensors. I feel they are distracting, but don't hold that against the car. I am old school and wish I could buy a rotary flip phone- so keep that in mind.

So now for the important stuff. Berrettafan's dealership description leaves out several key components. In addition to the watercooler:
1. you need TWO random people to sit in adjacent seats in your garage. One rambles relentlessly on their smart phone for one hour. The other drops their car off and is completely CLUELESS about cars in general and you wonder how they even exist.
2. You need to install florescent lights. A lot of them
3. You need a dealership car with a fancy factory bike rack mounted on it you can look at until your car is fixed!

Overall...so far happy with the car (wife is making payments- so what is not to like?)

So far I gather the Volvo is more reliable, but they both are not DIY serviceable for the most part.

Has anyone tried the Discovery?

Are the Cherokees that good?

Grands are IMO a very good option. Still a Chrysler product but a lot more ability and character than many others in the class.

No they are not. Cherokees are Fiats.

The GRAND Cherokee is quite good, though. Based on the Daimler Benz platform.

Are you looking to get new or used? FWD or AWD? Work on it yourself? Keep it how long? How many miles?

Do you like broken cars? Then I suggest the Land Rover.

Honestly, better options exist than either for a midsized SUV. What are you using it for? What are your must have options/features? Year, mileage, price?

I too have to give a big thumbs up to the Grand Cherokee. I bought a 2014 Summit version after looking at all the options; Mercedes, Range Rover, etc. I love my Grand Cherokee. It has not had a single service issue, the Summit version has every option imaginable, after 25,000 miles there is not a single rattle and it costs a lot less. I feel proud that I made the "right" choice not the popular "cool" one.

Choices limited to one that is safest in a wreck and the other that will never wreck as it rarely goes.

There are much better choices listed above!

Hi Peppy,
I really like our 2011 Lexus RX350. It is the one without the Darth Vader grill. Mpg in Imperial gallons is 25 but with US gallons would be around 20-21 mpg. I love the smooth ride and very quiet. I feel totally safe in it. Bought it 2 years ago and have no regrets. I did not buy new as it was too much $$$. I bought the extended warranty and expect reliability and has been reliable so far.

I tried BMW X1 and the VW Tiguan. They drive totally different from the RX and feel sportier but I wanted rock solid dependability first. The RX has a spare tire which I consider important on long trips.

Enjoy your search. Oh yes I tried the Rav4 but wanted something a bit bigger....

Sounds like you just described the XC60.

I'm guessing you are anti-Asian cars?

If not you can save a lot of $$ and get a Hyundai Santa Fe that will do everything you want and be trouble free.

I am a big Land Rover fan currently owning 08 and 09 LR3's and a 13 LR4. They have been fantastic cars. However, a friend bought a Disco Sport and it is complete piece of junk. I think that it has been in the shop more than 7 times and he is trying to get them to take it back under the lemon laws. I got one as a loaner at the dealership and did not like it at all. Transmission was not smooth and did not have the Land Rover feel that I like. I find that it takes a couple of years for Land Rover to work the kinks out of their designs. The first year LR3's were problematic but they become more reliable after about 08.

My mother just bought a Santa Fe. I was shocked how much they are going for. Darn nice vehicle tho.
