Mother-in-law moving to town
Now that her (2nd) husband has died she's leaving SoCal to be nearer to my wife (only daughter).
Not dreading it at all - she's a sweetheart, has enough money to afford an all inclusive "active seniors" apartment with available skilled care services, and will only be a couple of miles from us, so no big deal to go visit. The other upside is when we want to travel she'll come stay at our house and pet-sit. Anyone else have a parent from afar "move to town"? -C

Wow, that's neat that she is making it much easier on you guys, not all parents do that, and some actually get very needy and demanding. My parents, and my wife's parents live in the same neigborhood about 7 miles away from us, and both sets of parents have nursing home insurance if the need arises (not living with us).

Sounds like it should work out well, what a contrast to the psycho mom thread.

It sounds like you have a winner MIL.
![]() I got one too. She is great. She lives by herself in her own home 90 miles from here. She will likely stay there as her son, two grandsons and 4 great grandsons are there. The oldest great grandson is 16 now and has formed a great bond with her. He comes over to do the Honey-dos like changing AC filters and replacing light bulbs and washing cars and so on. That list is a LOT less for me to do now when I go to visit. ![]() I was with a group of men a few years ago and all of them were telling monster-in-law stories. I just sat there and laughed. At one point they all looked at me and one of them asked me what is your story. I told them I can only sympathize with them because I have a great MIL.

When her husband died my mother in law came down from Grants Pass and moved into our guest house. That was fifteen years ago. She is my second mom. At 90 years of age she does all the gardening and cooks lots of goodies for me. She is still sharp as a tack and navigates two flights of stairs numerous times a day. Oh, she still drinks and smokes. I love her dearly. One more thing, she goes bowling twice a week.

Charles it sounds like you have a keeper of a mil. It should work out well for you both.
Reminds me of my wife's mother who passed away many years ago. My fil outlived her by about 12 years.I still miss my mil and mother. They got along well. My fil not so much. Guy |

You have it made in the shade. I have never met my mil. Been married 20 years and dating a couple of years before that. She is in New York somewhere. Best mil I have ever had.

Yeah, I got lucky, first with my wife (amazing anyone will put up with me!) and then with her mom. I'm sure as she gets older (78 now) she'll get more needy, but the place she's moving to has all the primary bases covered. It'll be the first time since the 80's she and my wife will live in the same town, so that'll be an adjustment, but they are close (talk 2-4 x / week) so it should be great. I'll mostly act as the chauffeur. Within the complex there are numerous groups that do outings to theatre, movies, museums in their 20 passenger van, so even if we're not available there are lots of activities for her. If only we could afford to move there....

My MIL did the opposite. She moved to Taipei. I miss her a lot!

Some of those retirement places are like living on a land-bound cruise ship, with all of the amenities that are available to the retirees.
Sounds like it will work out nicely. |

My MIL is awesome. Minister in the United Church of Canada, rides a Harley and truly a decent woman. She expected me to call her Mom, which I find a bit odd, but I jokingly call her Mom2.
She's gotten to be pretty good pals with my mother and plans to visit her in Los Angeles this summer.
