The Romans were hampered by distance...they could not deliver forces quickly like we can with aircraft...and had limited intel(we have a fleet of ISR aircraft as well as satellites witch are more persistent. Bin Laden was a bit different...as we actually could not find him. ISIS/ISIL are not in hiding. They have set up a caliphate and are essentially governing a large region. We are doing essentially nothing and our lack of response has caused much of the carnage. |
Well, apparently Johny was suicidal while living in the UK, prior to joining ISIS.....
https://ca.news.yahoo.com/emails-suggest-jihadi-john-had-suicidal-thoughts-while-133211658.html ....which he eventually overcame as he found his true calling with ISIS! JJ, I'd say your days are numbered dude! |
He's still suicidal! Let's hope he acts on those feelings soon.

After thinking about this for a fair bit, I've came to believe that almost all of the problem of addressing ISIS might be distilled to a single issue--that to ISIS there is no such thing as kindness...that there is only weakness. And so, there can be no mercy shown for them as they will only portray it as (more) weakness.

We all know this guy is our enemy, lots of us want to disolve him in acid or put him in a blender
Just as sure as we are convinced he is one of our enemies, he (they) are convinced we are theirs. Im sure they feel just as justifed killing whomever as we would killing this guy Im certainly not sympathetic, but I think the issue is alot more complicated than good vs evil |
^^^^ It's not complicated at all. These "people" commit murders on video and put those videos on YouTube.
........ They are trying to provoke a response. What their plan is escapes me because all they've managed to do is alienate themselves from just about everyone. "Jihadi John" is not really important. So they've identified him. So what? That doesn't really help the situation. At some point they'll have to be stopped and there really is only one way to do that. |

The Romans were hampered by distance...they could not deliver forces quickly like we can with aircraft...and had limited intel(we have a fleet of ISR aircraft as well as satellites witch are more persistent. .[/QUOTE] True. So are we. Limited in both real time intell and geographic distance. Carriers etc... cost money. Lots of it. So does setting up camp in foreign lands. The cost of maintaining one soldier abroad is expensive. Very expensive. That does not include the cost to troops and families. Granted they are volunteer. But they are not robots. I would ask you to think about leaving your family for a month and see how it goes.... Now do that every other month for years on end. Even parking your ass in Motel 6 would wreck havoc on your family unit I would bet. The problems that we face in a would be endeavor to root out this evil are numerous. Granted as pointed out by OP, IS does not hide at this point. Rest assured they would. Intell, up to date and accurate is a great problem. Simply think of how long, with all our great techno it took to locate Bin Laden. Numbers game... lots of muslims, lots of enemies. Remember how the Soviets won WWII. Numbers game. Remember how we won in Afganistan? Oh wait, we did not. Yes, on the battlefield we did. Time passes and like rats from sewer out they come. Never a permanent surrender. I think the dilemna is much more difficult than many think. And it is not a dem vs. rep who is to blame issue. Bush and his cronies whether you debate how much blame they share would have no better LONG TERM result. Our troops, our military is neither designed, nor meant to be an army of occupation or a police force. That is what would be required for a permanent fix. Maybe, via a concerted world wide effort to expunge IS there could be a similitude of success. Maybe... IS could learn to curtail their more horrific actions to local actors and not western enemies and the world will be less envolved. If they keep up they may get what they wish for. Or seem to... However, mutation will occur and others will continue to step in. If that bodes ill for a real and lasting solution thay is probably the lay of the land. Remember the Cole? Guys floated up smiling before blowing themselves up. Such an enemy is not easily defeated. Same ilk here. |

One of the main problems with these extremists is that thier religion supports murder, terrorism, and hate, and generations have taught this hate to the next generation. It is honorable to be a martyr in the eyse of Allah according to his followers. This whole way of thinking is completely reverse of the Christian upbringing of many in America who lead this country. We can't understand for one minute why they would feel this way, and they for one minute can't understand how we feel the way we do, and view it as thier whole goal in life to take out as many of us on thier path to thier 72 virgins.
|
Would be better taking off the veils now, wouldn't have to worry about 72 virgins later and would be much happier.

I don't buy the religion component of it...not on the ISIS side and not the US side. Right and wrong do not depend on religion. Neither do hate and tolerance. Religions themselves can cause lots of issues (good and bad) but they don't cause this.

there was a great article posted here the otherday that took the stance that these guys are deeply committed religious fundamentalists and not just thieves and terrorist acting under the guise of religion
Its actually the only explaination that has mad sense to me so far. I really like the ideal that these are just terrorists. I think one would be deeply committed to absurd beliefs to act as they have it is scary |
