Another amazing bat rescue story........

In November 2014 the Casino flying fox colony in Northern NSW went down to heat stress and around 400 babies were rescued from the ground off dead mothers.
These bats were transported all over NSW and even to Adelaide, where they were raised till creche age (3 months). Then they needed to be returned to where there are colonies of their own species.
Here is the story of the return of 42 of these babies.
Thanks to all the people involved - you know who you are. It took many people to arrange and accomplish this transport.
Well done us.

Bats are cool.

One of our family friends is a professor at a local university and is nicknamed Bat Man. He is doing research on some of the local bats. There are a few colonies in western Oklahoma that do not have a virus that is devastating some of the other colonies. Right now he is speculating and working on a theory that the virus is spread by humans when they explore the caves. He is one of the few allowed on the property to check on the colony. The property owner and the university are funding the research to find the cause of the virus.

That's very cool, Glen.....I really like bats myself, as well.

Flying Foxes!

I just did a job for a client who built a bat house up at the apex of his roof under the eave. He also has 2 Purple Martin houses that he built.

Nature is full of wonder!

I have a bat house in the backyard, unfortunately, I don't have the sort of yard that bats find inviting. My yard is too tiny, there isn't a quiet, shady area, and the closest still water is not close enough. I had to try, though, and I still have hope! No luck yet.

(The beehives were moved to another host house last summer....bummer)

That's cool, Mike!

Your own little conservatory!

Inspiring!

I hope you get adopted by a bat family in the very near future!

We've got a bat house on our house, and it holds far more than I would have thought possible, I think we counted 19 one evening last summer. Bats are awesome and eat tons of bugs.

While siding our house, I found a lump under the tyvek and unfortunately ended up killing a bat. Later I found a similar lump, so carefully cut around it, and released a wasps' nest. I really wish that could have worked out in the reverse.

I love bats too!

Though I don't have any pics or video of the event I did save one young brown bat who somehow ended up in our basement back in September, probably via a loose dryer vent.
I happened to be checking on a hot water heater repair when I noticed what I thought was a mouse moving erratically on the floor. I got closer to it and realized that it was a brown bat. I put on some gloves and gently covered him up with a towel and then wrapped him up, much like Sam was wrapped up in the video. I took him outside and gave him some water via a spoon, and even caught a couple of bugs for him to eat.

He seemed ok and in good shape so I placed him on his tummy on an old woven place mat...something that he could grab onto, and then slowly lifted up the place mat to a vertical position. I then hung up the place mat about 6 feet up on a tree in the backyard, and then stepped back and...whooosh! Off he went into the night!

I felt a spiritual connection with the little guy! I'm hoping he'll come back this spring with all his buddies as.....I phacken hate mosquitoes!

Updating my bat thread....here are some of the little buggers enjoying some hot corn on the cob!

There's a lot of little videos on their You Tube channel if you are interested. I find bats fascinating!

I love that these at this facility are so well cared for!

Bats are cool. I remember first seeing them at my grandparent's golf course in Northern Wisconsin. I was probably 6 or so.

Thanks for posting Baz. Brings back memories from what seems long ago.
