I just want to share a very cool road trip. I have done 66 end to end and will do it again some time. Recently I enjoyed a nice sunday drive and hit 66 close to home.
Those of you in California should give it a try. The run to Needles is much more fun than expressway cruising. The run up out of the Colorado river valley into Arizona is a blast. I will admit it was a little warm when we went through this past august. If you enjoy recent history and a bit of nostalga, any section is a good experience. Nothing very important but a nice way to enjoy the 911 and somethimes that's all I need. david 89 turbo cab |

I'm going to be making the LA-to-Chicago run next weekend, I think. Although it will be in a Lincoln Navigator, and freeways all the way. Got to do it fast so I can get back the following weekend to race the Porsche at Streets of Willow.

Jack, for much of the distance Rt.66 is frontage road, it's on one side or the other of US40. When you are cruising along the expressway it's hard to look over at the strip of concrete and not want to touch it. Find a oldies station and let your sense of time wander. Speed wise, hmm lets say we were passing the cars that were on the expressway. I even got to wave to a trooper who was working the interstate.
Depending on how you break up your trip you might be able to jump on and go into some of the towns to fuel and feed. We found that some places were marked better than others but as a rule Business 40 is the old 66 right through the middle of the larger towns. david 89 turbo cab ps the cheapest 66 T shirts are in Shamrock Texas. |

Mark, the car thanks you for the compliment. One of the cooler things along the way is that many of the almost dead or dying little towns have taken a landmark building and made mini museums. The people often will come out and chat and share storys from a time that predates myself.. (1966-)
There are places all along the route where you step through time. This place is in Odell Illinois. |

How about making your own home page with some pictures you've collected along this tour of the highways and byways? Even a bit of the stories you've heard along the way? Would make for a great site. You've composed the pictures really well and that makes a great deal of difference too.
PS..I like your Interests listed in your profile...a man after my own heart and vintage. Cheers Mark [This message has been edited by expathk (edited 10-30-2001).] |
