What to do before Rennsport 5 ?
I'm coming down to Monterey for Rennsport Reunion 5 with a few guys from Nova Scotia, Canada. We will be staying on-site at Laguna Seca in an RV for the event. A few of us are considering coming early, say Saturday the 19th. ish...
We are definitely Porsche crazy, but we like other car stuff as well. We would also like to do a little golf but were not sure that Pebble Beach is in the cards. There has been talk of a cruise down the Coastal highway to L.A., just to see it. I'm looking for suggestions on "can't miss" California stuff between San Fransisco and L.A. that is primarily focused on Porsches, other cool automobilia and Golf. We would have 4-5 days outside the Rennsport days. Any ideas?

The Pacific Ocean is a little different then the east coast. How about a slow drive down Pacific Coat Hwy (PCH). There is no place like it in the world. San Francisco is also fun and the traveling time is a lo less but you don't get to drive PCH south.

Spend a little time in Big Sur and Santa Cruz. Its beautiful place. Canapa maybe close because I think they race that weekend. By then, you guys might be tired of looking at another Porsche.

good advice
Thanks for the tips,
Yeah, I think the Coastal Highway is a must do. Are there any hidden gems for golf? You know, great course, fair price.

Great courses but no such thing as fair price. Heck then even charge you to do the 17 mile drive

Well, if you get your fill of Porsches and want to check out something a little different, there are lots of interesting things to see & do between SF and LA.
As mentioned before, Route 1 thru Big Sur is drop-dead gorgeous...stop for lunch at Nepenthe's Nepenthe Restaurant, Big Sur, California SF has tons of things to do. See other threads here on this forum about what to do when you're there. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a world-class attraction that would be worth a visit. Monterey Bay Aquarium. There are lots of good wineries in the Monterey area too, if you'd like to do some tasting. Up in the San Lorenzo Valley, just above Santa Cruz, is Henry Cowell State Park which is home to some of the biggest damn trees that you'll ever see. These are old-growth redwoods, some of which have been around since the time of Christ. Henry Cowell Redwoods SP. There's a great live music scene in Santa Cruz too, with lots of small venues showcasing both national touring bands as well as local Bay Area acts. Check this site for local happenings: Good Times Santa Cruz newspaper, arts, music, entertainment. Ten minutes north of Santa Cruz, just off Hiway 17, is Canepa Design in Scotts Valley. This is a high-end automotive restoration/race shop that also houses a consignment showroom and a race car museum. Their visiting hours might be affected by participation at Rennsport...call before you go. Canepa For golf, you might look into DeLaveaga Golf & Lodge, also in Santa Cruz. Not as spectacular as Pebble Beach, but very nice nonetheless, and much less expensive. http://www.delaveagagolf.com/ If you get down south as far as the LA area and need a car fix, try the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar The Nethercutt Collection. Unfortunately, the Peterson Museum will still be closed for renovation while you're out here. Lots more to do in the area too...this is just a start. Have a great trip!

Try the course in Pacific Grove for reasonably priced golf. It not as long as some of the other courses on the peninsula but it does run along the ocean for a while and plays hard if the wind is up, it also goes inland through houses. It used to be really reasonable, I haven't played there in 20 plus years,so ymmv.
-Just checked you can get twilight rates for 41.00 per |

The wine country, Napa and Calistoga is about an hour or so north east of San Francisco. It is worth the visit. I am not sure if the wine train is still running, but a meal is included. There are just a ton of stuff to do in and around the area, more going south, so you guys just have to decide and plan accordingly. Monterey going south on PCH to LA will take you a whole day. The interstate will take about 4-5 hours should you need to get back up north on time.

My wife and I just returned from that area. We took the 993....my thought is heading up the coastal hiway (the week leading up to Rennsport) you'd probably have a conga line of Porsches behind the RV up to Big Sur! Rcooled definitely hit many of the highlights, Canepa is not to be missed for any Porsche/car guy. I would add Parts Heaven is in Hayward. They have shelves and shelves of used parts and a large inventory of new. Last Rennsport they had a fairly large vendor area that was worth a look. Cheers and have a great trip. We're still considering a trip to Rennsport but having gone with a buddy last time, I'm wondering if my wife has the uh.....stamina for Porsche immersion for a couple or three days...LOL.

Let me add one more car-related destination if you happen to venture up near SF. Over on the east side of the Bay, is the town of Danville and the Blackhawk Automotive Museum. This isn't just some converted industrial building full of cars, but rather a purpose-build facility especially designed to showcase classic automobiles in a truly beautiful setting. It's all glass & granite, with custom-designed lighting that brings out the best in every car on display. Docent-led tours are available, but not required, and the museum hosts many special events as well. They also have a cars & coffee on the first Sunday of each month that usually attracts well over a hundred classics, sports cars, customs, exotics and hotrods. Blackhawk Museum
