"Men Looking Stupid" commercial thread

Is it just me or does virtually every single commercial make it appear that men are complete idiots?

From the moron who cannot turn on the washing machine or boil water by himself to yogurt selections at the grocery store and car insurance purchases, it seems that the new target is now the male in any household. The one guy that sprays non-stick spray all over the countertop is a prime example--and the way his smirking wife rolls her eyes is classic.

She really needs a throat-punch.

To me this represents the exact opposite of how I live. I am not afraid to do housework of any type, am much more useful in the kitchen than most people, and in general prefer a clean, organized space--am I really in the minority here?

Here's one of my favorites--and God knows Allstate gets their use out of it.....

Oh yeah....get off my lawn.

Have you ever noticed how the dad or mature men in sitcoms are always stupid?

It seems to be the standard gag. It's not personal.

My guess is that it's how they target women who feel inferior. Besides there are LOTS of stupid people of both sexes out there to choose from.

I'm willing to let women folk make fun of me. The occasional horizontal mambo buys my silence. I'm a cheap date.

More specifically, it's typically white guys who are lampooned.

This.

White men are usually the complete idiot incapable of problem solving or doing anything right.

Unless it is a dude with ED and takes a pill for it. Then he can fix some things.

So so true.

I am a retired banker who will one day retire from a second career as a contractor. Therefore I know nothing about advertising other than it is painfully expensive - and I've never paid for broadcast advertising so that must be stratospheric.

That said, they wouldn't pay for such if it didn't work.

been a peeve of mine for a long time.
targeting insecure women.
There's one commercial with an old mop in the garage after she picks the Swiffer, the mop is her old (husband/boyfriend). Roach killing commercials also liken roaches to men.

But it's ok for Brawny or Mr. Clean to be strong and confident so women can bring him home. Same with a Mercury Mariner (bring home a sailor!) I've never seen a man driving that car.

Great thread Todd! I deal alot with commercials, very trippy side of the job. Creative vs. Client. Especially today where everyone "zaps" thru commercials, advertising has changed so much. You gotta catch them and reel them in.

There's some great ones out there, cleverness. You have have an introduction, subject/ story and have an ending/ resolution all in 30-60 seconds. Quite an art.

My current fave that I always have to watch is "Jake from State Farm". I laugh my ass off everytime and I must have seen it 500.

The "modern man" stereotype is unsettling at best, but it's popular.

IMO many modern women can't comprehend or respect a man who "knows how to do stuff."

If you're a 'successful modern man' you can afford to pay for someone else to do the stuff.

the time where a man knew how to fix $chit is over.

I did a front brake job on Ms. Gogar's Panamera for (All Pelican )cost + a few hours of my time and saved $750+ from her favorite stealership and somehow I lost relationship points for not being able to throw money down the rat-hole.

Maybe my beard isn't long enough or something.

This gets my vote for the worst one.

Firestone TV Commercial, 'Good Nap' - iSpot.tv

It bugs me on several levels. On one level I wonder how many women are influenced by the "real housewives" it's fashionable to be a b**ch mentality.

I try to imagine which reaction would come first, filing for divorce or burning her cloths in the driveway.

I'm not getting it... That woman has serious control issues.

Thuy LOVES it when I'm able to fix something and save us some $$$. Recently they AC control went out on her Van and the stealer wanted 2k plus labor. I fixed it 30mins with a $75 part from the salvage. She raves about it and all her friends think it's awesome because their men can't fix ****!

Good points, everyone! I get that the metrics on all of these ads must show that they work, else there wouldn't be so much imitation of the particular style.

I would like to see the roles reversed a few times though, just to see how long it would be before some watch dog group demanded an apology for the way the poor defenseless soul at the butt of the joke was represented.

I know, I know.....first world problem for sure!

This. This. This. Even the repair men around here can't fix stuff. (If) they show up, greater than half the time it's the same "need a (lower quality at higher price) new one". This disposable society sucks because the shiny sheeple are running the cult.

I don't recognize any of the ads you guys are mentioning which IMO means I'm doing something right and I'm rather happy about.

I still fix all my own stuff (maybe too much - becomes an endless "to do" list!). I hate throwing away money for some schlub to do. I get far more pleasure and enjoyment out of learning something and / or saving the cost of some so-called "expert" doing it. I didn't bust my ass in school and get As and work hard all these years just to hand my money over to the goofballs who got Cs. Unless there's something I truly hate and don't want to do (like rust repair body work for example) or something that really isn't worth my time to learn / do myself due to expert knowledge being required (surgery, dental work, etc.) I do it myself. My S.O. actually really appreciates it. So glad she's not one of these "fashionable beyatches".
