I need an older pickup truck
Business needs a 4 door work pickup. I want to get an older F150.
Looking for 2005-2010. Any years to avoid? Any engines to avoid?

Laughing at myself
Thread from 2010 and look who started it. Ford F150 - Any years, models, engines to avoid? I'm looking at a 2009, but it is high miles with a 5.4.

5.4 had an issue with the plugs blowing out. There was a class action settlement.

I would always choose to avoid the 5.4 engine. I've just not had good luck with them. They're gutless gas hogs, IMHO.

I got away from Ford trucks, and went to GM. I like both of the two models they made in the early 2000s. The so called classic has issues with rusty brake lines up here in the North. They are easy to work on, and have no issues with accessing plugs, etc..
Very easy to own and maintain, and they handle a lot better. |

Funny, you said old truck 2005-2010. I'm looking for a new truck, 2005-2010.
![]() Hard to argue with the LS GM trucks. Great engines, rust issues and some want a nicer interior. I like the way the GM rear doors work, although I'm only been in a similar body Ford a few times. |

I'm dealing with this right now on one of my 5.4L trucks. The thing is ticking away like a diesel. I have 2 new VCT solenoids in front of me that I need to install. Supposedly this fixes 'most' of the issues that people usually associate with the cam phasers.

had a new F250 with the 5.4. you could watch the gas needle drop while on a steep incline.
a gutless pig, at that. engine replaced under warranty at 35000 km's. due to some kind of death rattle. got rid of that thing quick as i could, after the new engine was installed. |

That's a very nice setup. If you notice the add you'll see he just spent 12k on repairs on the truck. I have 07 Chevy with 3 times the miles that I haven't spent 5k on the whole time I've owned it. I don't know why anyone buys a Ford truck Gas or diesel

Yeah, avoid anything with a 5.4 in it. They're terrible on gas and don't really have that much power. BTW I owned a 4.6 and 5.4 F150 ext cab 4x4. Couldn't tell any difference when pulling. I stomped the tar out of that 4.6 and never had any troubles. I didn't own the 5.4 long enough to experience the plugs blowing out.

The 4.6 is reliable but not exactly powerful. I found my truck underpowered with the 4.6.

The 5.4 spark plug probem was more of a "when changing plugs...the plug would strip out..leaving the threads in the cylinder problem" There are a few diff fixes that avoid an engine removal, but none are real easy.
I had that engine in a Ford motorhome and was told ..."if it runs..don't attempt to replace the plugs"
