counter top water filters(pitcher type)

I've searched under variants of the name but didn't come up with what I want. I've looked at Brita, PUR,Zerwater,Mavea and all seem to have current problems. The original units seem to be superior to current offerings. Has anyone here recently purchased one of these? And what is your reco for purchase? I'm not looking for a whole house unit.

What's the problem Brita? We have one. Our water tastes and smells 100% better.

I have a couple of the newer Mavea's and they work well. They drip a little bit when you fill them too full but other than that seem to do a good job of filtering the water.

Sorry for the hijack, but any thoughts on under counter filter that would connect either to the main faucet or a small auxiliary faucet?

Everpure with the H300 filter. There might be a newer model filter, but it escape my dumb brain due to a long day in traffic. Hospital uses this filter and restaurant as well but on a larger commercial scale.

I did a lot of homework on these. None of them are as good as they claim. The in line systems seem to get better marks. There is good info on testing out there in web land.

it will last a year before it needs a new filter.

Reverse osmosis and DI water systems are even better, but RO does make a lot of wastewater (about 5waste:1filtered) and most water supplies are very clean to start with, where a carbon filter is really all you need. Check your water district's yearly reports.

We've had the zerowater pitcher for around 9 months now. We are very happy with it. It comes with a solids measurement device that reads ppm. Water in our area is close to 500TDS which is high nationally. New filters bring that down to zero. Filters can drain slowly. Filter gets changed at 6TDS and above.

Fwiw, filters are cheaper on Amazon than the company site.

We are using a Brita for many years now.
Want to eliminate the calcification, we have very "hard water" here.
The Brita works well for the tea and coffee-machine.

Of course I wpuld like to have an in line system instead so that all the faucets and showers are saved.

I know, off topic a bit. Lifesource. Made in Pasadena. They are a whole house filter and they now have a water softener tank as well. Its completely maintenance free. I put in a lot of these for people. Plus, the water taste great and good for skin. Not cheap.

Oh yeah, all their salegirls look like that and they come to your home and give you a dog and pony show. Low cut shirts, short skirts and all. Some even play footize with your wife right there in front of you at your own dining table. Well, with my luck, I have an old guy. Damn, I always get the short end of the stick? Oh, the price, almost forgot. About 7500 bucks not installed.

We used a Brita pitcher for years and kept it in the fridge for good cold water until we bought a side by side fridge with water and ice in the door. It has a filter also, but needs replaced every year.

I have a Zerowater filter. I love it. 0 TDS. The 10 cup model comes with a graduated meter. You are told to change the $15 filter when it reads higher than 6. BS. And every month they send you an email reminding you to change your filter. I bought filters in a quantity of 8 at Target online for $8 a piece. After 3 months I still get a reading of 0. I live by myself with 3 dogs. FWIW my raw water has around 180 TDS, but loads of chlorine and other chemicals that make it taste like poison. The Zero makes the water taste like Aquafina. And I don't waste all of those plastic bottles. Every couple of weeks I buy a fresh set of Deerpark spring water in the sport bottles and refill them several times, because after a few uses the plastic bottles get skanky.

The Berkey is good for volumes of water. I have a 5 gallon system I made with food grade containers and two Berkey filters. But the TDS does not go down much and the water does not taste as clean as with the Zero.

We have a large stainless Berkey that sits on the counter. It's mostly maintence free, lasts nearly forever, and looks pretty nice as well. It uses gravity to draw water through the filters, so you can't get instant filtered water if it's out, but other than that we love it.
