Shawshank revisited

In northern NY, sounds like an inside job to me. The place is definitely the pits.

Power tools???

NY gov.: 2 convicted murderers used power tools to escape - AOL.com

widgeon13 06-08-2015 05:21 AM

Update......

(CNN)Convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat pulled off the kind of prison break that would normally be fodder for movies -- except theirs might be even more astonishing.

Armed with a complex plot and power tools, the pair did what no one else has been able to do in the 170-year history of New York state's most populated prison -- escape from its maximum security walls.

Now, as authorities look for the men in three countries, many are left scratching their heads.

Here's what we know and don't know about their scheme:

The tools
What we know: Matt and Sweat, who lived in adjacent cells, apparently used power tools to cut through a concrete-and-steel wall at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, authorities said.

What we don't know: How in the world they got those power tools -- and how guards didn't hear them being used.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the prison, built in 1845, undergoes regular maintenance, so it's possible the tools came from workers who are often in the facility.

The company who employs the maintenance workers is cooperating with the investigation, New York State Police Maj. Charles Guess said.

The escape
What we know: After cutting through the steel walls of their cells, the two followed a catwalk "down an elaborate maze of pipes into tunnels and exited a series of tunnels at the manhole cover," the governor said.

What we don't know: How Matt and Sweat could have known the layout of the dark, complex labyrinth in the bowels of the prison well enough to make their way out.

The help
What we know: The investigation is so fresh that nothing has been publicly discounted -- including whether the men had help in their getaway.

What we don't know: Who that help may have come from. Did a maintenance worker leave behind power tools? If so, was it intentional or accidental? Did a guard help them out? Or did someone from the outside actually carve their way in to reach the back ends of their cells?

The freedom
What we know: The two men left only one message during their escape: A yellow note on a pipe that read, "Have a nice day!"

For Matt, this isn't his first time escaping prison. In 1986, he escaped from an Erie County jail, the New York governor's office said.

Upon his capture, Matt was sent to a maximum security prison in Elmira, New York in 1986 on charges of escape and forgery. He was released from the Elmira Correctional Facility in May 1990.

What we don't know: What the two men will do next.

"Because they're stone-cold killers, you would expect them to stop at nothing to get out of the prison and to maintain their freedom once they are out," CNN law enforcement analyst Tom Fuentes said.

"That means they could have invaded one of the local homes in that small down, killed the people, stole their car, and driven halfway across the United States by the time (authorities) even know they were gone. So the police are going to have to check for the well being of every resident in the town."

CNN's David Shortell and Monte Plott contributed to this report.

Didn't I see a thread on PPOT a little while back that asked, "How to break out of prison."

widgeon13 06-08-2015 06:05 AM

No one had ever broken out of this place. It's a hell hole built in 1865 I believe.

GH85Carrera 06-08-2015 06:46 AM

It is only logical they had some major inside help, and some major incompetence acting together. With a little luck they will figure out how they managed to pull it off. With a little more luck they will find those tow and kill them and no cops hurt. Those two are a text book case FOR the death penalty.

widgeon13 06-08-2015 07:07 AM

The authorities haven't a clue where these guys are.

Hope all New Yorker remember this when they think of Cuomo's Safe Act gun law!

wayner 06-08-2015 07:18 AM

Is that why they tazed that woman?

A friends yard, near Plattsburgh, NY😁

flatbutt 06-08-2015 07:02 PM

Inconceivable to consider that they used power tools without being heard. There is more to come on this.

widgeon13 06-09-2015 04:41 AM

These guys are gone.

Why inside help, and not outside help? Tools could have come from a drone delivery.

maybe someone broke "IN".

A battery operated angle grinder would have lost power long before those cuts were made, and they were much bigger than needed to be. And those look way too clean to be made with a torch. So they used AC power?!?

GH85Carrera 06-09-2015 03:48 PM

Yea, angle grinders on a huge pipe or a steel wall would be LOUD! They had lots of time and no one noticed?

New York prison escape: Clues suggest killers on foot - CNN.com

widgeon13 06-11-2015 04:58 AM

Still on the loose. They (LEO) don't seem to have any solid clues.

Now they are saying a cabbie spotted them in Philly and had them as a fare to the bus station.

I would think they would have split up by now. Staying together doesn't make sence to me. The cabbie is just looking to be interviewed on CNN.

widgeon13 06-13-2015 04:03 AM

At least they arrested the beeeotch that assisted in the escape. Pleads not guilty but tells how she helped them, yeah she has half a brain.

Geary 06-13-2015 10:45 AM

New York Police Maj. Charles Guess said, "We've got a man combing the beach in Zihuatanejo .." Those two are long gone.

widgeon13 06-13-2015 10:50 AM

That's a good one! I've been trying to remember that name but forget about spelling it.

I hope they send a card if they are there so we can stop looking for them and save some taxpayer's money.

flatbutt 06-13-2015 03:10 PM

Apparently they had inside help from a prison employee who provided the tools. But that still doesn't explain how they could hide the noise.

onlycafe 06-13-2015 05:07 PM

maybe this?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1434240469.jpg

widgeon13 06-13-2015 06:17 PM

It's all pretty strange if you ask me.

Inmates being given special privileges when they are in for life?? These two scumbags were allowed to wear street clothes and be in a special section of a high security prison.

Once again PC completely gone amuck! Like they deserve any special treatment after murdering a few folks and dismembering the body of one guy.

Chocaholic 06-13-2015 06:21 PM

Well, right now they're making the entire police/security team look like buffoons.

widgeon13 06-14-2015 03:31 AM

LEO"s got nothin!

Comments of a local.........

"My wife and I love to be outdoors," he told the AP. "We haven't done any of that, and when we do go outside now, we're armed."

This will help making New Yorkers stronger against the "Safe Act", that's about it.

If you've never spent a day or night in the Adirondacks, the black flies and mosquitos can be un relenting.

ossiblue 06-14-2015 08:38 AM

Seems to be two schools of thought on this.

1) Over estimating their plan: The break was so complex, well planned and executed that the two must have also planned a complex getaway once free, with several options. They "set up" Mitchell as an accomplice to drive them away, but were never really going to use her. Her failure to show was not a problem because they had some other way to get from the scene and anything Mitchell might say would lead authorities in the wrong direction. The remains of commissary food was just part of the deception. They are long gone.

2) Typical convicts: As complicated as the escape was, they had a very simple plan once free. The getaway fell apart when Mitchell failed to show. They are together and now wandering the region close to the prison as they had no fallback plan. Time and the elements will, eventually, flush them out.

Which of the two is correct will only be known when they are found, sooner (#2) or later (#1)--if ever (#1).

What I'd like to know is, what happened to the power tools they used? I can't believe they took them with them (in the guitar case some witnesses say they saw a man carrying). Possibly, they have been recovered at the scene but the police have not disclosed that.

widgeon13 06-14-2015 03:05 PM

Our beloved governor Cuomo is now confessing they don't have a clue, pretty discouraging.

Just talked to our friends in Cadyville and their house has been searched THREE times (in the last few days) by anywhere from 4 to 8 law enforcement officers at one time.

daepp 06-14-2015 04:27 PM

Prison guards want convicts to have every luxury possible to keep them easy to guard.

widgeon13 06-14-2015 04:57 PM

That's probably true but they don't make the rules.

These two guys were in for life and yet could wear street clothes and had special privileges. It's not a country club just more PC BS.

widgeon13 06-16-2015 05:29 AM

Costing the state $1 million a day to continue the search in the immediate area and no joy so far.

The residents are actually setting up R&R areas for the searchers and LEO's, what a fiasco.

Now the political jabbing is starting as well, blame game for things like budget cuts etc.

daepp 06-16-2015 12:31 PM

In CA, I'm afraid they do.

widgeon13 06-19-2015 07:29 AM

Looks like the local effort might be winding down some. They have been put on the FBI Most wanted listing, surprising no one has seen anything of them.

They're probably in the gallery out at Chambers Bay for the US Open and already received their first welfare check. :D

URY914 06-19-2015 09:06 AM

Free cheese, an Obama phone and gov't scholarships for training to be OTR truck drivers. Pulse a Vote for Hillary bumper sticker.

Who says they can't be rehabilitated?

widgeon13 06-19-2015 09:30 AM

They are sitting somewhere having a few beers and laughing their asses off at us knowing they fooled everyone.

Perhaps they'll request amnesty.

widgeon13 06-21-2015 04:29 AM

These guys have been wet, cold and hungry for two weeks.

Leo's haven't a clue.

I think we need to get the WH in this!

onlycafe 06-21-2015 02:07 PM

the hunt goes on.... just reported to be in the bolivar-friendship area.

Could be, but if they're smart they aren't doing it in the same bar. They would be foolish to remain together when the law is looking for a pair of escapees.

widgeon13 06-23-2015 05:16 AM

DNA found 20 miles from Dannemora but still no bodies. Looks like they are still together.

More heavy rain last night and the bugs are still bugging! They must be praying to be caught by now.
