For the other geezers...

On my commute into work this morning my Pandora station served up the Rolling Stones classic "(I can't get no) Satisfaction" I remember sitting on the floor in my bedroom making model airplanes in 1965 when that song came on the radio and I became a Stones fan right then. That was 50 YEARS ago!

When I first heard "You can't always get what you want" I loved it and it has been and still is a favorite song of mine and I often call it my theme song. One reason I loved it was my brother hated it so that made it even better.

The only point of this post is how many other songs that you loved as a pre-teen or early teenager do you still consider favorites?

I will come clean and admit that before the Stones and the Beatles I loved one of the very first (if not the first) British invasion bands, Herman's Hermits. I still have all their albums but I have to admit I don't really care much for their music anymore.

My love for the blues as a poor, white farm boy growing up in the sticks was the first time I heard the Rolling Stones "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" album (1969). I remember my old brother 'borrowed' it from one of his friends as they had a garage band and were trying to learn some of Keith's licks. Even though most of it was sloppy and at times out of tune - there was no denying it was soulful. It made the hair stand up on my arms. It made me lust to be a guitar player; to be in a band.

I did not know, at the time any Black blues artist's, only their music that was stolen by main stream rock radio players. Only much later did I educate myself on how rich American blues music was but that was largely forgotten or stolen from the original people. Also I learned how prolific some of the earlier blues guys were, something that was apparently lost on America's youth in the 50's / 60's but wasn't in other countries.........................................

Not sure which i still consider favorites but for an OWG with a good case of CRS I am constantly amazed at how many of the songs from the late 50's through the 70's I still remember most of the words to (and in the privacy of my car sing along with )... from Buddy Holly to Dell Shannon to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac to Don McClean... they just don't make music like that anymore in my OWG opinion...

and I'm sure some of the younger Pelicans are saying "Thank God"...

The band that blew me away when I first heard them in 1978 was The Police. Stewart Copeland inspired me to learn to play drums. I still love listening to them.

Bu... bu... but, I don't always get what I need!

Going to have to think on this one some... I was also a huge Beatles and Stones fan.
However be warned I may have to even go farther back to Dylan or even... Peter, Paul, and Mary (shudder)

"Wish you were here" has been my anthem sort of... and it still moves me when I hear it.

I remember when I was in high school I was up late one night working in the darkroom. I had the local radio station on and the DJ was playing "Album Sides" I think it was mostly so he could sleep.

Anyway he put on "Goats Head Soup" and started doing other things and was not paying attention. I am pretty sure he did not intend to play "Star Star" but I am pretty sure he got fired. When I went to try to buy the album the record store had it locked up and would only sell it to someone over 18.

The first 2 33 1/3 albums I ever got were Rolling Stones Greatest Hits - High Tide and Green Grass and best of the Beach Boys Vol I.

They pretty much set the course. Later it was Crosby Stills and Nash and Best of The Supremes.

Now my older brother's collection included Dylan, The Animals, Gene Pitney, and The Ventures.

I know I played that Stones album a million times....

The first song I remember hearing was...."Ain't Nothin But a Hound Dog." by Elvis back in 56. When your 3 years old it's dogs that catch your attention. Later, Purple People Eater...

First Stones song that I could say yeah about was "Get Off My Cloud" in 65.

Top 10 Stones songs in chronological order.*

1. Under My Thumb

2. Jumpin Jack Flash

3. Sympathy For the Devil

4. Stray Cat Blues

5. Gimme Shelter

6. Midnight Rambler

7. Monkey Man

8. Memo From Turner

9. Cock Sucker Blues

10. Can't U Hear Me Knockin

* I couldn't just do the top 5... Gimme would be my top choice though, because so much of my life felt just like that...
