You might want to check your cabin air filter on your car

I changed mine a year ago. Apparently a mouse was living in there. And I drive the car every day. I took the Camry into Toyota today for a recall thing, they offered to change it for $70, the filter cost me $25 and five minutes of work.

My dealer offered to change mine for $100.

I laughed at him. My wife Subaru. It was something stupid like $300. At least hers required tools. I never knew hers had a filter. We went seven years with the original. It was awesomely gross

I changed the cabin filter on my wife's car before the one she has now. The procedure was explained in the manual. The manual for her current car only says to take it to a dealer to have it done. I looked on the internet & found out it's not much more involved than the last car. I wonder if cabin filters are expensive because they are a low volume thing.

I have the same car as Hugh and even my wife, who could not possibly care less about cars and working on them, could change the cabin filter.

$100-$300 is highway robbery even for dealerships

There was a story here locally about a dealership that was doing the routine warranty serve on cars they sold. They would grab an old nasty filter like those in the pictures and show it to a customer and tell them they had to replace the filter and that is not part of the warranty. It was always a few hundred bucks. One reporter put in a new filter in his car in just a short time and marked the edge of the filter with his initials.

He took his car in and they showed up with a nasty filter to tell him they needed to replace his filter. He paid his bill, went home and pulled out his same clean filter with his initials on it. It was pure and simple fraud from the dealership. Several people were fired and the dealership almost lost their license.

I don't believe I have one of these on any of the vehicles that I own.

I know for certain that my 1985 911 or my 1986 El Camino has no cabin filter.

I learned how to change mine from You Tube. It wasn't hard but if I hadn't seen the video I wouldn't have known how easy it really was.

You can buy new filters on eBay - mine were about $8.00 incl. shipping.

For me it was a simple DIY and WELL worth the effort!

Easy there, Hugh. That could be company property. Remember, you do work for the "Mouse".

Sorry, couldn't resist. I am on a long phone meeting...I am logging off now, never to post again.

Not sure any of my pre-99 cars have a cabin filter, I will have to check her 2002 BMW 325ci for one though.

EDIT.....sure enough, when she gets home, i'll have to remove the under hood plastic windshield cowling and take a look.

I seem to remember you having some expertise in environmental toxicity, air quality or something.

How long was that filter in there before you changed it again?

Ha, just pulling your chain, I think my Miata might have one, but I pretty much only run the A/C to keep the seals from drying out.

I asked at flaps for my 08 Silverado and they had no listing a couple weeks ago. I looked online and Chevy and GMC deleted the filters in the 08 model.

I bought a Nissan Armada years ago as a family truckster, it came from the countryside West of Dallas. Really nice SUV but A/C performance was tepid at best, and fan airflow was terrible. The filter was filthy (dealer serviced) but also had about 4" worth of acorns stacked on top of it. I also found acorns under the intake manifold in the engine V. Dunno how the little bastard squirrels managed to get in there, I'm just happy I didn't find a body.
