Thank you! I thought I was the only one thinking this would be a good combo. (I wonder if it's available in Europe?)
The older allroad with the 4.2 was a monster! I looked at a few used models, but never bought one due to the high failures of the air suspension. |

Because you aren't buying them!!! Which is also why they no longer offer an A4 or A6 wagon.

Market analysis probably doesn't capture the 3 people on PPOT asking for this option.

Is it still true they also won't/don't/can't make a TDI with DSG and Quattro? I think an A3 with that setup and a sport trim/wheel/suspension package would be a killer DD. A TDI S3 basically.

Or with a six-speed. Oh, that's right. Nobody in the U.S. wants to drive a manual transmission anything.

I want the 5 pot turbo, manual with anti-lag, quattro, avant, without a sunroof or power windows, made from aluminum, titanium, magnesium, unobtanium and carbon fiber--in photogenic black!!!

And that's the problem - we here are enthusiasts and typically a bit picky about what we want. Our list of preferences cuts against the grain of the public-at-large which seems to want big cars (for their fat asses) with lots of sugar-water (cup) holders and extra space so they can clutter it up with all their crap so it looks like a teenager's bedroom. Oh, and they want to never have to wash, maintain, clean or really do anything for it other than maybe put gas in. And it has to have lots of distracting screens, buttons and flashy lights. And it has to basically drive itself so that they can pay attention to more important things like chit-chatting with girlfriends, doing nails, text messaging, watching YouTube videos and channeling our inner rock star grooving out to a pumpin' sound system (all bass, no treble or midrange).
Pretty much the antithesis of everything we ask for, no? |

That's some pretty specific insight--someone here might have a little Audi obsession issue!!

I just LOVE that special vehicle!
32cm shortened, 306 - 600 hp 128 Tornadored, 48 Alpinwhite, 21 Kopenhagenblue, 15 Malachitgreen, 2 black Makes ... 214 hmmmmmmm Ah! 6 prototypes in Tornadored, not for public roads ... Gruppe B required 200 vehicles for public roads, so Audi fullfilled that requirement "by far". Walter Röhrl was one of few who could control this vehicle Evolution E2 at its limits. He always made the setup of the headlights by himself. One headlight to high, one to low, to compensate the cringing. 530 hp catapulted the E2 from 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds. One of the vehicles was tested with a Porsche doubleclutch-transmission which resulted in 0-100km/h in 2.6 seconds! The motorvolume was reduced from 2,144 litre to 2,140. The turbo/no turbo factor of 1.4 would have resultet in 0.002 litre above the magic 3 litre-mark! After a tragic season in 1986 with several crashes and deaths Audi decided to stop the engagement. Gruppe B was dead. In 1987 Audi decided to participate in Pikes Peak, with the 600hp wing-monster. 0-100km/h in below 2.5 seconds. But the thin air lowered the performance. The motor only performed 450hp at the finish-line. Röhrl was seven seconds faster then the second Ari Vaatanen. With 10 minutes and 47.85 seconds it was the first time below 11 minutes. Fun read-
Thought of an All-road but then again the problematic / petty issues becomes old in a hurry. Just want a simple appliance 200-250 hp AWD. Older and ugly MB wagon / 4-matic is more appropriate. Fuel mileage is a plus too. --------- Piech had a black quattro. Dialing back the time machine. Had my jolly's with an ur-Quattro and got caught up in the mod's department. Don't really miss it today but its a vehicle one never forgets. Balz out over frozen lakes makes anyone look like Rohrl or Stucki. LOL And lastly, same era (1982). I recall seeing a VW Rabbit diesel / electric hybrid Siamese prototype. Toured the show circuit but don't believe many took note of it. Ahead of its time but probably a turd to get it moving and up to 50mph. Somewhere still have a brochure about it.

I'd like an allroad with the S4 drivetrain. However, you can blame the DOT, not Audi really.
Manufacturers have to crash test every combination of body/engine/transmission to be sold. This means if Audi wants to offer an allroad with a manual transmission, they have to go through the full round of crash tests again. My understanding is that costs a few $million and that's a big fixed cost to overcome if that that particular model isn't going to sell well. It's not simply a matter of importing the particular car and verifying emissions. Quote:
